The Austin Allegro was launched in May 1973, and it has to be said that although the styling was unlike anything else on the road at the time, it also lacked the appeal of some of its key rivals. Sales never lived up to the expectations of BLMC management, and it rapidly gained a reputation for unreliability.
The Allegro remained in production until 1982, and today stands as a monument to all that went wrong for the state-controlled car manufacturer in the Seventies.
