The Austin 1800 was launched in October 1964, with Morris and Wolseley versions following it into production. Its ungainly stance soon earned it the affectionate nickname 'Landcrab'.


Drawings & prototypes

The 1800 had a long and tortuous gestation, having its origins in a 1500cc mid-sized car designed by Alec Issigonis in 1956.

BMC had a couple of goes at producing a Vanden Plas version of the 1800 before abandoning the project.
