Vampi's birthmark |
|
One of Vampirella's more endearing qualities is the fact she has (perhaps I should say 'had') a birthmark in the shape of a bat just above her right breast. In the first first Vampirella story in Warren's Vampirella #1 the birthmark is introduced (see pic on right) as a fairly large mark. The panel even refers to the birthmark and tells us that it is significant. This is presumably because we are about to be introduced to the fact that Vampirella is a vampire (albeit a rather different one from the usual). |

| The history of this birthmark then goes through some interesting changes as it appears and disappears, even momentarily appearing on her left breast for a brief moment (but perhaps we blinked and missed it ...) |

This is the traditional image, seen here in the story Blood Queen of the Bayou in Warren's Vampirella #23 and #74 and the Harris reprint Transcending Time and Space |
| A far more powerful colour image by Jose Gonzales shows the birthmark (much smaller than the original) still on the right breast, but it seems to have moved down a bit. | ![]() |

In the picture below from Carnival of the Damned the birthmark has moved to the left breast (Warren's Vampirella #11). Oops! It happened again in the preview panel on the back cover of Warren's Vampirella #23 and was commented on in the letters page in Vampirella #26. |

The appearance of the birthmark on occasions only (mainly in the stories between Warren's Vampirella #18 and #30) is obviously some kind of Drakulonian trait, rather like the huge wings Vampi can sprout when required but which disappear immediately afterwards. Note on the right - in Vampirella's cameo appearance in Shattered Image #4, the bat has mysteriously moved to her left hip. |
