| James Halperin |
|
In April 2001 an entire mint collection of Warren Vampirella magazines was bought for $4,050 (quite a sizable sum). It was outside my price bracket (regrettably), but I contacted the winner of this fabulous collection, Jim Halperin to find out a bit about someone who was obviously keen to buy such a vintage collection of original Vampirella. Jim is a fascinating guy. He is co-founder of the Heritage Rare Coins Galleries, one of the most successful coin dealers in the US, author of two best-selling science fiction books and a collector of EC comics (which is what led to his purchase of the Vampirella collection offered on eBay). After his successful eBay bid I contacted him to ask him a few questions about purchasing vintage Vampirella. His response (which was both rapid and warm) is printed below. |

Mike: Have you been a Harris Vampirella fan and took advantage of the Warren set to buy the old magazines? Jim: No, I don't have any Harris books. My main collection is EC comics, then I added Creepy & Eerie because of the artistic and literary similarities, then Vampirella seemed like a natural part of the progression. Mike: Are you buying the full set to sell/keep? Jim: See my answer to #3 Mike: If you keep it - have you already got any Vampirella comics already (Warren or Harris)? Jim: Yes, my Warren set was already about 2/3 complete. I'll keep the best one of each issue. Mike: What other rare Vampirella items have you got (if any)? Jim: The Vampirella Patch Mike: Some people would say you were mad spending all that money on 112 magazines. How would you answer them? Jim: I think it was a reasonable price for the quality. I'd say you can't say fairer that Jim's last comment, and good luck to him. He has a fabulous collection of original early Vampirella comics, the envy of many of us. |
