Crossover comics are a strange phenomenon, where the character(s) from one comic meet the characters from another. The phenomenon is even stranger when different publishers agree to publish a crossover each, often featuring a double issue story as each publisher gets to publish half the story. |

Vampirella is no stranger to crossovers, and often the story interweaves with the on-going plotline. Here we are only looking at those crossovers that have resulted in alternative and limited covers. In the late 1990s we started to see a series of crossovers emerge with three of the other 'bad girl' comic characters, Shi, Painkiller Jane and Lady Death. These definitely enhanced the variety in the Vampi storyline (especially Painkiller Jane who added a welcome touch of humour to the story, which was strictly outside the normal plot yet fitted in with the overall ethos of Vampi's world). However, Shi and Lady Death genuinely added to the on-going saga that was successfully running throughout Vampirella Monthly as a series at the time. That is the mark of a real crossover, one that is not there simply to introduce the readers of one character to another (in the hopes it will stimulate sales perhaps?) but that uses the other character to move the story and the development of the character on. |
