Badges are odd things.  We like to have them, we like to wear them, and yet we don't like to be thought of as 'one of the crowd'.  In the words of Number Six - we are all individuals - we are "free men".  So why are badges so collectable?

Perhaps it's because we also like to belong, we like to be part of a group of people who appreciate what we appreciate and like what we like.  In the world of the fan club, badges are the way we recognise each other.  And whatever anyone says - badges are cool.

On the right is the original Vampirella fan club badge, the one you received if you joined the Warren Vampirella fan club.

The picture looks like it was taken from the Aslan cover for Warren's Vampirella 1972 Annual.  The button is a good example of the feel of the original Vampirella,

The badge for the Scarlet Legion on the left is the one I received when I joined.

The latest fan club button is shown on the right.  The picture is Joe Linsner's fabulous picture from the alternate cover of Vampirella Monthly #21.

On the left is the Vampirella Blood Drive Button from the first Harris Vampirella Blood Drive. This was held at the Comic Book Extravaganza in New York City in 1995. Each blood donor was given a badge (only 150 were made).  It was never sold.  The artist for the button was original Vampi artist, Gonzalo Mayo.

This button scan was sent to me by Max Gottfried, a dedicated collector and eBay dealer. He has some really good stuff on eBay.

On the right is a very special badge. Made of pewter, this is one of very few that were made by a toy dealer in the early 1990s.  Two were recently traded on eBay, and this one is from Gary Hawfitch who kindly gave me permission to use his own scan. It was sold by Max Gottfried who also gave me permission to report on the sale, and who provided the Blood Drive badge below.

This badge is very rare and highly collectable and fetched $95 on eBay.  Because of its unique nature and intricate detail it will soon be worth much more. You can even see the bat mark on Vampirella's right breast.

On the right is another blood donor button.  Only 100 of these were made, and they were given away at the 1997 Blood Drive. 1997 Blood Drive button

Not really badges, but sort of like them, on the right are these three patches that Warren advertised back in the 1970s in all his magazines.

As you can see, Vampirella is in the middle, looking so much better than Creepy and Eerie.

The real badges are seen below (courtesy of Gary Hawfitch)

The Warren collection of sew-on patches I have to admit the Vampirella patch does very little to make her look good - but perhaps you have to see the real thing.

These are really rare collector's items now - worth a lot on eBay.
