Jose Gonzales is still, in many people's minds, the definitive artist for Vampirella. As the illustration to the right demonstrates, his Vampirella is beautiful, powerful, menacing, haunting, captivating ... The descriptions can go on and on. Jim Warren is quoted as saying that he never felt he had the right artist for Vampirella until he saw Gonzales' work for the first time, staring up at him out of some pages that had been brought to him on the off chance he would be interested. As soon as he saw them he forgot his important date for that evening, he forgot all his plans, he just knew he had to hire the Spanish artists who could draw what he wanted. The result was many years of superb Gonzales art that still lives on today in the reprints that Harris publishes for those who never saw them the first time. |

I admit to being biased over this myself, for only Joe Jusko has come close (in my estimation) to capturing the essence of Vampi in his superb paintings. |

These are just some of Gonzales' work, capturing both the raw detail of the original pages from my Warren collection and some of the later coloured work for the Harris reprints. To me, his greatest gift was that he gave Vampi a personality, a person who could laugh, love, feel remorse and fear. There are few in comics able to do this, and Jose Gonzales was one of the best. |

His first story for Warren was Death's Dark Angel, which is still one of my favourites. He became one of the most proficient artists to draw Vampirella, and his work was still going strong when Warren Publishing folded. Gonzales provided many full page drawings for the inside cover and contents pages. They are all masterpieces of graphic art for the serious Vampirella collector. |
