197. Henry Campbell Bruce J.P.
Henry Campbell Bruce J.P. (1851-1929) became Vice Lieut. for Glamorgan and succeeded his father to become 2nd Baron Aberdare. He married Constance Mary Beckett and had 7 children
399. Capt. Henry Lyndhurst Bruce
Henry Lyndhurst Bruce (1881-1914), became a Captain in the Royal Scots Regiment and was killed at the Battle of Ypres (his name is commemorated at the Menin Gate Memorial), so it was his brother, Clarence Napier Bruce (1885-1957) who inherited the title of 3rd Baron Aberdare.
402. Victor Austin Bruce
Victor Austin Bruce (1897-1978) was a racing motorist of the 1920s, well-known at Brooklands and the first British winner of the Monte Carlo Rally in 1926. He married a noted motorist and pioneer airwoman, Mildred Mary Petre, and together they set up several landmarks in motoring endurance.

In the 1880’s Aveline married Ambrose William Longuet-Leyton who may have been attached to one of the sugar estates in Essequibo. He too died young, leaving Aveline a widow with six children dependent on her, her income being a pension of £100 p.a. and $8.00 a month which she earned as resident governess to a neighbouring planter’s family whilst Henrietta looked after the children at Sandgrove. Nevertheless, Aveline managed to get her children to England one by one with the help of the Bruce family (Lord Aberdare) and kept them there at school, spending holidays with relatives. Frederick Orlebar (1890- ), her last child, was about to depart from Demerara, when she was disappointed at his sailing being delayed on hearing that ‘a lady who had offered £60 to help with his education had withdrawn the offer when she heard he was a colonial’. Aveline’s other children were:- Constance Anna (1884- ) Aveline Maria (1885- ), Ambrose William, Ethel Bertha (1887- ), who married Dr Vincent Coates (1889- ) [a distinguished physician who died in a train accident] and died a widow in poverty in Essequibo, and Katy Henrietta (1889- ).

In 1904, he married Beatrice May Holden (1877-1960) and they had a daughter and adopted a son. Latterly, Wyndham lived in Montreal

428. Vera Kathleen Eva Dowling
Vera was a Civil Defence Ambulance Driver during World War II. In the 1950’s she was one of the founders of the Surbiton and District Historical Society. She lived in Surbiton, Surrey, all her life. Vera was also very interested in her line of the Austin family and contributed the pictures of Thomas and Charlotte Austin and their family that appear in this book.
223. William Edward Piercy Austin
He was born in British Guiana and went to Reading School and then to Magdalen College, Oxford, where he read classics and history and gained a B.A. degree in Classics and History in 1883. He was captain of his college boat club and just missed his place in the Oxford eight in 1883. He went to Australia in 1885 where he was an assistant master at Geelong Grammar School, Melbourne, from 1886 to 1888. From there he went to Invercargill High School in New Zealand and then as Senior Master to The Hutchins School, Tasmania, until 1895. In 1896 he was appointed as a master at St Peter’s School, Adelaide. He returned to Melbourne, where he was head of the new Wesley College Preparatory School. Subsequently he went to St Paul’s Cathedral School, Melbourne, where he was headmaster for 24 years. He married Mary Harriet Peerman (1860-1952) and they had two children.
224. Mary Annette Piercy Austin
She married Alexander Milne and they had two daughters, Celia, believed to have been born in 1903, and Annette Mary, (1904-1984). Annette Mary married Rev. Stephen Sinker and they have a daughter, Celia Audrey.
