"Unattractive" Barge Yard Allowed to Stay on Thames. The well-known Woods barge and boat yard at Isleworth Ait (island) in the Thames in west London has been allowed to keep its floating dry dock despite complaints from neighbours. The local government had told Woods to remove its new dry dock (the former one had been too small) when residents in expensive new riverside apartments facing the yard complained about the appearance of the yard and the noise its operations produced. However, the appeal inspector found that although the yard was indeed unattractive and noisy, it had been there a long time and the design of the barge was "not out of place on a working river". and that "cessation of the use would be harmful to that role".
