Forthcoming Show: Sally HeywoodGloriana

Gloriana 1, 2003 (Oil on canvas)

31st October - 5th December

Gloriana, Heywood’s second exhibition since returning to Britain from Berlin (where she spent 10 years) has a celebratory affirmation of colour not seen in her work before. Combined with this is a return to the instinctive and emotional response to landscape and nature of her earlier days. The palate has become more vibrant while also becoming more varied. Underlying this new development though is still the rigour and control that continues to make her work strong and vital. The jewel like nature of these paintings, faceted by the depth of the paint-marks evokes a poetic intensity reflected in the title of the show; a reference to Spenser’s Faerie Queene (set in the mythical court of Gloriana).

Visit our website from 12.00 Monday 27th October to see more images and download a virtual catalogue of the show

Last few days to see:  Sam Francis - 1923-1994

Untitled, 1980s Tempera on paper

17th September - 27th October

This exhibition, a collaboration with Robert Sandelson Gallery in Cork Street, has been very well received by critics and visitors. Martin Gayford writing in the Sunday Telegraph said: “…he [Sam Francis] deserves a retrospective such as this one… It should be at the Tate.” With a mix of museum quality pieces and small affordable works this exhibition should not be missed.

Lufthansa Student Awards

Broadbent in association with Lufthansa have just installed the latest group of student works at Heathrow.  The scheme has been specially designed to give young artists the chance to exhibit their work and win a substantial award, while presenting the visitors to the Lufthansa lounges a changing landscape of new and innovative works. The current show features works from University College Chichester. The previous winner from Brighton University was Angela Lilly Sakayam who was presented with her prize (a return ticket to anywhere in Europe courtesy of Lufthansa) this month. More details of the Lufthansa scheme can be found on our website.

Diary

Planning ahead…

It looks as though our show for the festive season will (perhaps unseasonably!) be called 'How Heavy is Black?'

It will be a group show focusing on the different ways black works in images, We hope to exhibit work that ranges from the diaphanous layered black watercolours by Joachim Bandau (an artist who has never shown in Britain before – but whose watercolours are amazing things) to the gravity-defying black of Eduardo Chillida’s drawings. Other artists in the show will include Ian McKeever, Hamish Fulton, Sam Francis and Alan Davie.

London Art Fair

As of the time of writing Broadbent will not be appearing at Islington for the London Art Fair next year. We have been invited to take our ‘usual’ stand at the fair, but after four years of gallery growth we do not feel the location does justice to our artists, so we have asked to move to a larger stand on the mezzanine level. If this does not work out then sadly we will not be exhibiting there in January.

Bologna Art Fair

On a happier note we will again be participating in the art fair at Artefiere Bologna. After a very successful opening appearance last year we have been invited back again. This art fair is quickly being accepted as the finest contemporary fair in Italy, and has a very large international audience. Dates are 22-26 January 2004. Do come and visit us there - a large contemporary art fair located in the food capital of Europe makes for a lovely week-end away!
