will and compulsion features seven artists new to the gallery, selected by Pierre Imhof, Ingrid Kerma and Kate Palmer (all of whom are gallery artists). All of the artists selected, while having roots in countries as far afield as Croatia, Persia and Italy are based in London and are addressing issues relating to abstraction, process and painting.

At a time of renewed discussion regarding the importance of painting and the possibilities of abstraction among both critics and an emerging generation of younger artists, this show was conceived as an opportunity to explore a range of work being made today. Ivanišin’s City Scape images for instance are constructed using newspapers and magazines as a form of abstract collage which are then photographed and C-type printed, while O’Neill’s work escapes from the tradition of a four sided canvas and flattens itself to the wall.

The artists on show have contrasting strategies where for instance in Andrew Vass’ work the history of the marks and the way they are layered form the painting’s own narrative, while in Gabriel’s work the painting takes place in the instant of pouring. These artists escape the hedonistic tendency of artists such as Franz Ackerman (whose work is in this month’s Christies sale of Contemporary art) while stretching the notion of what it is to be an abstract painter today. Mark Pearson exemplifies this; his work develops out of the formal methodology of process painting, but the result, caused by the natural tendency of paint to coalesce on the canvas, is paintings that have an engaging, biomorphic quality.

Coming soon: Pierre Imhof: ‘String’

(New works on canvas and paper)

12th march – 17th April 2004

While the paintings in Imhof’s last show Pixel Shmixel started with regular structures such as pixellated surfaces from computer screens which Imhof then blurred through repetition, displacement and superimposition, the work in the String show might be said to reverse the process. Beginning this time with mere lines, which are packed and woven together, these new works produce an uneven textured space inhabited by scratches, squiggles and drips. Then from the apparent chaos of the primitive and disorganised emerges coherence, even elegance, in paintings that might recall either the suave roughness of a Coco Chanel tweed, or the lucid depths of Monet’s lily-pond.

2. Staff Changes

Farewell to Sarah

We are very sad that Sarah Sandys-Renton, our gallery manager for over two years, has accepted a job with the Royal Horticultural Society. She started her new job the Monday after the London Art Fair, so did not even get a day off between jobs – and as yet has not had her leaving party! But, Sarah will still be in the gallery updating the website for us on a regular basis and we will be arranging a party for her as soon as she has settled into her new job. Thank you Sarah for all your help over the last two and a bit years.

Other Staff changes

Lisa Howard, who has been with the gallery as an intern for nine months, will take over Sarah’s role as gallery manager. We will be looking to recruit a new member of staff to help Angus on the sales side at the gallery – initially this will be a part time post. We would love to hear from anybody who thinks they may be interested in applying. Please call Lisa Howard for more information.

Events

London Art Fair: 14-18 January 2004

The London Art Fair is a staple in Broadbent’s annual calendar. This year we were located downstairs on the mezzanine level, and felt very comfortable in our new position. It seems that the fair though is undergoing some uncertainty about its direction – caused in part by the recent proliferation of art fairs in London.

Bologna Art Fair: 22-26 January 2004

The Bologna Art Fair, by contrast has a strong sense of direction and is expanding into new enlarged premises next year.  We had a lot of interest in our artists and follow-up from visitors to the fair last year. All the British galleries (approximately 10 of us) did well - although as always, the food in Bologna would be persuasion enough for us to return next year.
