At a time of renewed discussion regarding the importance of painting and the possibilities of abstraction among both critics and an emerging generation of younger artists, this show was conceived as an opportunity to explore a range of work being made today. Ivanišin’s City Scape images for instance are constructed using newspapers and magazines as a form of abstract collage which are then photographed and C-type printed, while O’Neill’s work escapes from the tradition of a four sided canvas and flattens itself to the wall.

The artists on
show have contrasting strategies where for instance in Andrew Vass’ work the
history of the marks and the way they are layered form the painting’s own
narrative, while in Gabriel’s work the painting takes place in the instant of
pouring. These artists escape the hedonistic tendency of artists such as Franz
Ackerman (whose work is in this month’s Christies sale of Contemporary art)
while stretching the notion of what it is to be an abstract painter today. Mark
Pearson exemplifies this; his work develops out of the formal methodology of process painting, but the result, caused by the
natural tendency of paint to coalesce on the canvas, is paintings that have an
engaging, biomorphic quality.

While the paintings in
Imhof’s last show Pixel Shmixel started
with regular structures such as pixellated surfaces from computer screens which
Imhof then blurred through repetition, displacement and superimposition, the
work in the String show might be said to reverse the process. Beginning
this time with mere lines, which are packed and woven together, these new works
produce an uneven textured space inhabited by scratches, squiggles and drips.
Then from the apparent chaos of the primitive and disorganised emerges
coherence, even elegance, in paintings that might recall either the suave
roughness of a Coco Chanel tweed, or the lucid depths of Monet’s lily-pond.

will be a part time post. We would love to hear from anybody who thinks they
may be interested in applying. Please call Lisa Howard for more information.
The
London Art Fair is a staple in Broadbent’s annual calendar. This year we were
located downstairs on the mezzanine level, and felt very comfortable in our new
position. It seems that the fair though is undergoing some uncertainty about
its direction – caused in part by the recent proliferation of art fairs in

The
Bologna Art Fair, by contrast has a strong sense of direction and is expanding
into new enlarged premises next year. We
had a lot of interest in our artists and follow-up from visitors to the fair
last year. All the British galleries (approximately 10 of us) did well -
