Gary Komarin

The naming of John Dreamer

"Komarin's current achievement in painting is a strong reminder that the future development of painting may indeed lie in exercising and understanding the directions and methods of the recent past. The fifties brought American painters closer to the muscle of their medium. The wake of the brushstroke guided the pursuit of what seemed important, revealing a form- language of infinite possibility.

Komarin's acrobatic command of visual orchestration brings a certain light, youthfulness, and optimism which, when so well applied to the 'stuff' of daily experience- makes [his paintings] so encouraging and unforgettable.” Prof. R Baker, Museum of Art, University of Oregon

“Komarin deftly uses shape and form to play with the moment of recognition: when does a mark stop being a mark and become an object? The viewer is left with the enviable task of sorting through the signposts in this painterly landscape. The reoccurring shapes in his work – the wig, the cake, the vessel -- lend themselves to different levels of interpretation. At the same time, these images create a sense of absurdity in the painting: they are imprecise, quirky, and even romantically fanciful.” Hamlett Dobbins, Director, Clough-Hanson Gallery, Rhodes College, Memphis, Tennessee
