| Riber. p.254 Riber is a small hamlet in this parish [Matlock], situated on a lofty eminence. Adjoining Riber Castle is a Free Methodist chapel, built by the late John Smedley. Riber Castle, the residence of Mrs. Smedley, is an imposing structure of local stone, situated on the brow of the hill, 860 feet above sea level, and commands most extensive views. Riber Hall, now occupied as a farm house, is a building of considerable antiquity.
