In March, 2002, Showa Denko K.K. (SDK) qualified the
AIXTRON AIX 2400G3HT Planetary Reactor® System for the
mass production of Ultra-High-Brightness blue LEDs (470
nm). Showa Denko is one of the leading manufacturers
of wafers produced by MOCVD and continues to focus on
maintaining its world leading market position and advanced
technology level. Commitment to expanding the compound
semiconductor business has been underlined by the recent
successful installment of several AIXTRON systems. The
new AIXTRON system was financed within the framework
of the NEDO Project entitled "The light for the 21st
Century". NEDO is a semi-governmental organization affiliated
with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan.
The project aims at developing a new illuminating device
that is highly efficient and which possesses highly
luminous characteristics (twice as energy efficient
as compared to existing fluorescent lights) using LEDs,
which will be able to replace incandescent bulbs and
fluorescent lamps. This project is jointly carried out
by the NEDO and the Japan Research and Development Center
for Metals (JRCM) through a subsidy provided to NEDO
by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. JRCM
carries out the R&D with the co-operation of the
universities and enterprises.

Sterling, VA, USA, based Sterling Semiconductor was
established in 1996 to manufacture SiC wafers and advanced
electronic device components made there from. Sterling
has been the recipient of many US Government R&D
grants and contracts to develop leading edge materials
and device technologies for military and commercial
applications. Sterling currently has a strong backlog
of US Government contracts, including a prestigious
three year Title III contract to establish a 3-inch
SiC wafer production line. Sterling's R&D efforts
are conducted at its facility in Sterling, Virginia,
and manufacturing is conducted at its facility in Danbury,
CT. Sterling has a worldwide sales network within North
America, Asia and Europe. Sterling has a number of alliances
and sales arrangements. For example, in September 1998,
ATMI, Inc. and Sterling Semiconductor, Inc. announced
that ATMI's Epitronics business has signed a multi-year,
multi-million dollar strategic alliance agreement in
SiC wafers with Sterling Semiconductor. Sterling Semiconductor
is also Wafer Technology's partner for SiC wafers.
Sterling Semiconductor, Inc., was acquired by Dow

Sumitomo plans to confirm the practicality
of single-crystal for epitaxial growth for lasers; to
establish a mass production system which will include
process technology; and to begin sales by 2001. The
GaN single-crystal substrate will not only accelerate
movement towards common use of blue lasers, but will
also promote new developments in electronic devices
which employ gallium nitride semiconductors.
