When compiling the market report GaN
Wide Bandgap Materials & Devices for Elsevier Advanced
Technology, it quickly became apparent that the level of
interest in these materials for opto and micro-electronic
applications has reached amazing proportions. Only a decade
ago these difficult materials were the province of just a few
die-hards who went against the prevailing R&D mood in
semiconductors knowing that they must be on to something.
Thanks to the pioneering work of such luminaries as Pankove,
Amasaki and not to mention Shuji Nakamura, the opto world was
turned on its head as far as R&D and device production was
concerned. Once the poor cousin of other III-Vs such as GaAs
and InP, GaN and its related compounds have become a very big
business one which is going from strength to
strength.
Herein we provide an alphabetical listing
of companies with a known interest in the field replete with
URLs to take you to them. We would caution, however, that such
is the level of competition in this field that most likely a
lot more is going on than these websites will tell you. Some
of the key players reveal only the salient facts such is their
worry as to protection of their hard-won knowledge -
competitive advantages can be won or lost by loose lips! It is
a balancing act of proving your product has what it takes
versus letting the other guys know what you know.
