Crystal IS was incorporated and founded in New York State, in March of 1997. Currently, the company is part of the renowned incubator on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) campus.
With a management team of highly educated, experienced, and innovative scientists, Crystal IS is the creation of co-founders, Dr. Leo Schowalter and Dr. Glen Slack.
The company's current focus is on the development of a proprietary technique for growing larger and higher quality AlN crystals. Boules as large as 15mm in diameter have been produced. Crystal IS plans to have 5-centimeter diameter substrates commercially available in 2003.
Crystal IS, Inc. is a market leader in the commercialization of single-crystal aluminum nitride substrates for the cost-effective production of high power, high temperature, and optoelectronic devices such as blue and ultraviolet lasers. Crystal IS has a goal to produce the best single-crystal AlN substrates for the nitride semiconductor industry. Specifically: increases in size, growth rate and yield so that the overall cost per individual device unit is reduced. Crystal IS is increasing nitride crystal growth diameters to proportions typical of the established compound semiconductor fabrication industry. These are sizes that are unprecedented for nitride semiconductors. Larger, high quality wafer sizes means more useable devices per substrate at a cost that is below what is possible with current substrates (such as sapphire or silicon carbide). This means these substrates will be more appropriate for commercialization.
