For
manufacturers of advanced silicon semiconductors, Accent offers
fast, fully automated, non-destructive process-control solutions.
Customers use Accent's products to characterize their materials
and screen their production processes.
Accent
Optical Technologies is a leading supplier of process control
and measurement tools for the optoelectronics, wireless, and
silicon semiconductor equipment industries. Accent's systems
perform critical functions for high-yield manufacturing and
new material development.
Amongst
the characterisation equipment offered by Accent relating
to GaN materials, Accent offers the Dynamic I-V Analyzer which
will reveal the high-frequency responses in III-V, wide band-gap
and RF power semiconductors rapidly and cost-effectively.
Dynamic I-V measurements use short pulses to avoid changes
in deep-level trap occupancies and self-heating. Therefore,
Diva is able to reveal the true high-freqency responses of
devices. Such measurements are particularly important for
compound material systems which have medium or high levels
of deep-level traps. This includes GaAs, InP, SiC and GaN
based technologies.

Supplier of high purity organometallics and gases. It recently
made a multi-million dollar investment in a new, ultra-high
purity ammonia distillation plant at its Hometown, PA, USA,
electronic specialty gases manufacturing complex.
Onstream now Air Products is producing high volume, ultra-high
purity White Ammonia™ —with a minimum purity of
99.99996% (6.6) and a targeted purity of 99.99999+% (7.0+)—to
meet growth and purity expectations in compound semiconductors
and other markets such as 300mm semiconductor fabs and FPDs.
The emphasis is on serving established and new customers in
North America, Europe, Taiwan, Korea, China and Japan for
growing end use markets applications such as LEDs, lasers
and laser diodes, photodiodes, and high power compound semiconductor
transistors and ICs. For exmaple, in late April 2003 it signed
an agreement with China's leading III-nitride LED producer
Shanghai LanBao Photoelectric Materials Co., Ltd.
Air
Products and The Pennsylvania State University are continuing
their cooperative research efforts to understand the effects
of gas source purity on Group III-Nitride (AlGaInN)-based
thin films and device structures. This program—under
way since the beginning of 2002 and part of a larger multi-year,
multi-million dollar strategic alliance between the University
and Air Products—has been evaluating typical residual
and other metallic impurity levels in layers grown by MOVPE
using high purity ammonia sources, and the impact of these
impurities on the structural, electrical and optical properties
of the compound semiconductor materials. The objective of
the program is to conclusively identify and reduce sources
of oxygen and other undesired impurities within the MOVPE
environment, including the development of new high-purity
ammonia sources.

With
an installed base of well over 700 MOCVD systems world-wide,
AIXTRON is, as verified by VLSI Research Inc., the world leading
supplier of equipment for semiconductor epitaxy and has been
rated amongst the 2002 10 BEST in its category in the most
recent VLSI Customer Satisfaction Survey. Its equipment is
used by a diverse range of customers worldwide to manufacture
critical, advanced components including GaN-related lasers,
LEDs and electronic devices.
The company has an extensive service and support network in
over 15 countries. AIXTRON's many customers include Agere,
Alcatel, Anritsu, ATMI, Avalon, AXT, Epson, Honeywell, Infineon,
IQE, IQE Silicon Compounds, ITT, JDS-Uniphase, Kopin, LumiLeds,
Mitsubishi, Motorola, Nortel, Optospeed, Osram, Procomp, Samsung,
Showa Denko, Siemens, ST Microelectronics, Sumitomo, Thales,
UEC, VPEC as well as numerous Japanese corporations.
AIXTRON systems have also been installed in the most renowned
research institutes worldwide, including CNRS, Fraunhofer
Institute, ITRI-OES, JPL, Meijo University, NDL Taiwan, Research
Center Jülich, RIKEN, Sandia Nat Labs, Tsinghua University
and the University of Tokyo. AIXTRON is very active in advancing
MOCVD technology through collaborations and joint R&D
projects with major partners worldwide.
Specifically,
AIXTRON is a manufacturer of MOCVD equipment for wide bandgap
compound semiconductors. It also offers related equipment
such as EpiTUNE® II which has been designed to monitor
processes at temperatures between 400 and 1600°C, i.e.
all III-V processes such as GaAs, InP or GaN based ones can
be real time monitored. Based on Luxtron proprietary Ripple®
technology, EpiTUNE® II allows measurement of the reflectivity
of growing wafer surfaces as well as true surface temperature
with an unrivalled precision. Monitoring of semi-transparent
substrates is also possible.
An
example of one of the company's many GaN-related sales successes
is South Epitaxy Corporation (SEC), the Taiwan-based specialist
in the production of UHB LED wafers and chips. The high throughput
AIX 2600G3 HT MOCVD Planetary® Reactor will increase its
already existing installed base of AIXTRON systems. The 24
x 2-inch system enabled SEC to ramp up its production capacity
for high-end GaN based UV, blue and green LED wafers.
AIXTRON is also successful in related areas such as OLEDs
and diamond films. For example, it has an OVPD, Organic Vapor
Phase Deposition, Equipment for OLED displays at Universal
Display Corp. The uniformity of blue, green and red OLED films
surpassed the expectations and demonstrates the scaling success
for FPD manufacturing, yielding very bright light emission
across full 6 x 6 inch² panels.

In 1997, ATMI first expanded its nitride epitaxy manufacturing
capacity with the addition of an AIXTRON 200/4. In 2000, ATMI
expanded further to enable production of GaN substrates. ATMI
has over twenty patents issued or pending for its GaN expertise.
ATMI's III-V Division in Phoenix, AZ, USA, has a multi-step
expansion plan underway for both its silicon and III-Vs that
can already handle more than 100,000 wafers/month.
In September, 2002, in response to increasing customer demand,
ATMI, Inc. expanded its GaN epitaxial capacity with the purchase
of AIXTRON's 8x4" III-Nitride MOCVD reactor.
