Children & Obligation



Are children an obligation? Why?

I'll go through this one quickly!

A child may be defined as a dependant person. I.e. until they reach the age of independance they remain dependant upon a gaurdian. What age that is is open to rational argument, the principle is not.

Having a child is a choice - more than ever in the medically advanced end of millenium. Even without that it is well known what causes babies - sex!

If you choose to have sex you undertake an agreement to accept the responsibilities of doing so, namely the possibility of a baby.

Its not the pregnancy or the delivery that reflects your responsibility - its the having sex. As a side note rape is non-consensual - you cannot be responsible for something you have no choice over.

Because a child is chosen (see above) and because a child is dependant until adult, the having of a child is a chosen obligation for the duration of the childs dependance.
