'Local Past' Archive.
As part of our links with the local community, Alcester Grammar School is pleased
to able to produce and host the on-line publications of the 'Alcester
and District Local History Society'
This two year project, started in October 1998,
is intended as an online resource not only for the citizens of the local area but also for
those further afield with an interest in this topic.
The resource is still in an embryonic stage and,
at present, contains some 200 or so articles indexed by location and topic.
Eventually over 2000 articles, maps, images etc.
on all aspects of our local history will be available on line. Ranging from short
articles from the 'Local Past ' quarterly journal to longer in-depth studies of local
places and events.
Roman Alcester
Alcester is the site of an ancient Roman town.
The Council for British Archaeology
have published details of a major excavation carried out in the 1960's:-
Alcester
Excavations 1966 Volume 1 Southern extramural area
This project revealed a comprehensive picture of the development of one-fifth of Roman
Alcester including a wealth of structural and other details. An excavation on this scale
is unlikely ever to occur again.
