Sawmills

Ar 84 Estate Sawmill SP 083564 Lord Herford’s estate saw mill, behind Arrow Rectory. Various timber buildings on low brick courses; tiles roofs; three modern electric powered circular saws with moveable tables; still in use. Age of sawmill unknown but some of buildings look very old. Gas engine installed here early 1900’s (Alcester Gas Company’s minutes CR0).
Sp 229 Sawmill SP 086625 Report of sawmill and sawpit between Spernall Hall Farm and river to Mr. Cleeton of the farm from man aged 80 in the 1900’s; no visible remains.

Steam Laundry

A 19 Station Road SP 085577 Site occupied by Regent Motorways depot; modern building approximately same plan as steam laundry which was in operation at turn of the century; at one time powered by gas engine; 1908 Needle Almanac gives Alcester Sanitary Laundry and Miss Doherty as manageress.

Pounds
Most parishes had pounds to lock up stray animals; there was one near Oversley Bridge; known sites in our area are shown below

St 275 Mappleborough Green SP 078658 No remains; near Orchard Place where "Pound Cottages" were; brick-built pound on 1886 OS map; demolished c. 1914.

Dovecote

K 161 Kinwarton SP 106585 Doves were important food source in winter when other meat scarce; this is a circular stone building of 14th century; tiled roof; lantern; dormer window; ogee door; since 1957 belongs to National Trust.

Ice-houses

These were underground covered pits with openings facing north; used to store winter ice collected by workers from ponds, to preserve master’s food in the summer.

Ar 83 Ragley Hall SP 072555 Brick-lined pit about 15 m. deep & 6 m. diam; ‘vaguely egg-shaped; shown on current 6" OS map.
St 232 Old Castle SP 081638 Now converted into garage; 4 m x 6 m. x 2 m. high; arch and some bricks at house end appear original; shown on 1886 OS map.

Vegetable Drying Factory

Sal 204 Dunnington Heath SP 065539 Hiller’s Farm; converted to vegetable drying works in 1916; now used as barn; root vegetables were flaked and packed in 10lb tins for army; steam engine was in lean-to shed; 2 men and some women worked 12 hour shifts until 1917 when machinery sent to new works at Chipping Campden; references in RDC records 1916.
