Cambridge U.F.O. Group
There have been
several UFO research organisations in the Cambridge
area over a period of many years. In the 1960s and 1970s there were two organisations
in Cambridge
called the Cambridge UFO Society and the Cambridge University UFO Research Society. Both of these groups were members of the BUFORA.
The late Carol Kingsland-Christy (pictured to left), who was Secretary in the early years of the group and was Honorary President until
she died in January 1996, formed the present CUFOG in March 1993.
CUFOG
exists to promote interest in, and research of, UFO and related phenomena
especially in the county
of Cambridgeshire. To
further these aims, CUFOG supports a small research and investigation team,
which are currently studying a number of UFO reports from different parts of
Cambridgeshire. Some members of the group are also investigators for BUFORA.
Members of the group have been interviewed about UFOs a number of times by BBC Radio
Cambridgeshire and the Cambridge
Evening News, and occasionally by Q103fm
radio and more recently Red TV.

Although
UFOs are thought of as a modern phenomenon, if fact UFO reports can be traced
back many centuries. One of the most famous of these early reports are the events seen over Nuremberg, Germany
around dawn on 14th April 1561. These events were portrayed in a
famous woodcut, which is shown here.
The
Cambridge UFO Group was an Associate of the International Committee for UFO
Research (ICUR)
and works closely with the main UK
national UFO organisation, the British UFO Research Association (BUFORA). CUFOG has also in the past
worked closely with the Northamptonshire UFO Research Centre (NUFORC).
Most activities of CUFOG are currently suspended
although there are still occasional private meetings of the members.
UFO Reports from
Cambridgeshire
There have been many UFO reports from Cambridgeshire and surrounding
areas over many years. CUFOG as part of its research and investigation
activities has been searching out earlier reports as well as investigating new
reports as they occur.
The
earliest report held by CUFOG concerns sightings of a strange airship over the Cromwell Street
area of Peterborough
in March 1909. In November 1962 a hazy white object was seen over Cambridge at about 21:30.
At 2:50pm on 16th October
1976, Mrs. Kathy Tribe reported two stationary lights over the city of Cambridge. She observed
these gently floating in the same place for about three minutes before they
suddenly moved off in different directions at great speed. An individual report
from a single witness without any obvious special knowledge, seeing two objects
in the distance is not usually considered very important. However…
At 11am the same day, a teenager was
travelling in a van with two of his friends near Warminster. Looking out of the
window they saw what were later described as two, metallic looking, spherical,
objects. The witness and his two friends thought the objects were stationary
over a small village in a valley. Could these three young men have seen the
same objects a couple of hours before Mrs. Tribe?
But, it
gets better!
At 2:50pm on 16th October
1977 - that is the same time on the same day exactly one year later than Mrs.
Tribe’s report - an object was reported over Cambridge airport. It was seen coming from
the southwest. At first the witness thought it was an aircraft. The radar
control officer who was on the runway at the time said he thought the object
was approaching too fast and not on the usual approach line. It passed overhead
then returned, turned a half circle, started to rotate then left at high speed.
There have
been many reports from Cambridgeshire both before and after the incidents
mentioned above. Over the past couple of years there have been a number of
reports of strange lights seen in the night sky from the Newmarket area, but these have turned out
after investigation to be light shows from local nightclubs.
One area
of interest is around Harston, on the A10 between Cambridge and Royston.
There have been a number of reports from this area over many years. Although
there is evidence that some of these might be due to atmospheric effects this
does not account for all the reports. Areas like Harston
where there are repeated reports of UFO phenomena are of value to researchers.
A similar area exists in Northamptonshire, which is under investigation by NUFORC .
Further information about these light phenomena can be found here.
Forthcoming Meetings
Meetings start at 8pm
and last until approx. 10:30pm.
All those interested are welcome to attend; a small charge (£2) is made to
cover costs. Whilst it is not anticipated that the content, date or venue for
any advertised meeting will be altered or cancelled CUFOG reserve the right to
