Breathtaking Rides - Awesome Music
Saturday 20th May 2006

Take the UK's most prestigious theme park with white knuckle rides and add in an awesome music concert and you have the perfect recipe for an astounding May day escapade.

After a day of screams, thrills and stomach churning rides it is then time to continue what some have dubbed the longest day, with an evening of staggering entertainment and dazzling music. Right from the start Ultimate has been excited about establishing a credible, action packed, fun day out that is relevant using music to communicate to today's generation.

The evening will explode in action with an extraordinary brand of Hip-Hop from Greenjade. This will be followed by RPM -the cutting edge youth ministry band from the Abundant Life Church in Bradford. Then Matt Redman, author of songs such as Heart of Worship, Once Again, Let everything that has breath and Blessed Be Your Name will take to the stage.

We also welcome two giants from America - Rebecca St James and Tait. Rebecca will bring her own brand of rock with an epic overlay of pop sonics to the party. Michael Tait, famous as part of the awesome DC Talk, will take the stage to bring the event to a climax with his long time friends that make up the band - TAIT.

Add to this Graffiti Artists, Ball Jugglers, Magicians, a football cage, DJs and Tough Talk we believe that it is one Incredible Day.

"We want to ask everyone attending to bring their friends and families, who have not started this journey with God, to a day that could well change their lives forever." - Billy Ritchie

ALBUM OF THE MONTH

REBECCA ST JAMES : If I Had One Chance to Tell You Something. (Forefront : FFD39558)
Well, after last month's brilliant album by Third Day, I didn't expect to be blown away again, quite so quickly. I've always liked the music of Rebecca, but this album tops everything that she's done before. It kicks off with an indie pop song, "Called to God" and then rocks into Kelly Clarkson territory with the guitar inspired "Alive". Early entry for the best intro of the year must go to "You Are Loved" which the kids in one of my school classes described as "great". It's a lighter song, but has brilliant hooks and chorus. Song after song hit home with simple truths about God, and Rebecca's voice is on fine form. "Love Being Loved By You" declares that Jesus is glorious in a pop/rock praise sort of way, and the medium paced "Take All of Me" confirms that belief. Really, I could wax lyrical about each of the 12 songs, as they are so good. The package comes with a DVD including concert footage, although I can't comment about that, as my copy wouldn't play. But, for the CD alone, it's totally awesome. 10/10.
SELAH : Greatest Hymns. (Curb : 8788902)
Selah are a trio who have been around the US CCM scene for a number of years, and have a fine pedigree behind them, of creating very listenable albums. This new release takes a number of well known hymns, alongside some lesser known ones, and gives them the full Selah treatment. After the opening "Be Thou My Vision" and "Great is Thy Faithfulness", the album really fire's up with the simplicity of "Pass Me Not, O Gentle Saviour". With just a piano accompaniment, the trio really launch themselves wholly into the song. One thing I didn't enjoy was the twice when they sing the blues. "Amazing Grace" must rank as one of the worst versions that I have ever heard, while "Precious Lord..." is almost as bad. By contrast, the lullaby version of "How Great Thou Art" works really well, and there's some terrific harmonies too. "His Eye is on the Sparrow" is one song that I hadn't heard before, but I thought it was very well performed. It's an unfussy album that many will find helpful to relax or meditate to, and that must be well worth a look. 7/10.
THERE IS A REASON - This Hope (www.thishope.org)
I've grown to like Southern Gospel music in the years that I've been Music Co-ordinator for UCB Radio, and although the Gaithers seem to dominate the market, there are others out there who are doing quite nicely, thank you. This Hope are five guys based in Woodstock, Georgia, Daniel Johnston, brothers David and Tim Inabnit, Jeane Bope and Mikah Boudreaux, and this is a very polished product, their sixth release since their debut in 1998. The whole thing is full of good tight harmonies (I can vouch for their ability to sing excellent acappella), and it's miles away from some of the cheesiness that often masquerades as Southern Gospel, thanks to excellent production from Scott Williamson, a bunch of seasoned sessioners handling the musical bits, and on three tracks, the presence of the Nashville String Machine. There are audio demos of the guys' repertoire available on their website, suffice it to say that 'Break My Plans' is on the UCB Inspirational playlist, with more to follow, so that should tell you all you need to know. Well worth investigating. 8/10 Trevor Kirk
TROY DONOCKLEY & DAVE BAINBRIDGE. : From Silence. (Open Sky Records, VPDVD15)
Some of you may recognise Troy and Dave as being members of "Iona", and you may also know that they are not averse to producing solo projects. This DVD is a particularly interesting one - a totally improvised performance recorded live in Lincoln Cathedral in October 2004. Troy provides the melodic elements to the composition, playing a variety of whistles, Uillean Pipes and acoustic guitar which intereave neatly with Dave's chordal and rhythmic underpinning. The clever use of loops and fat orchestral sounds ensure a lush and vast soundscape which reverberates wonderfully within the structure of the building. The binaural recording technique captures these nuances beautifully and there is a real sense of concord within the whole performance. It is a shame that the picture quality doesn't quite match that of the sound, but I found that I didn't seem to notice the visual shortcomings after a while, such is its power both musically and spiritually. I could also mention the numerous typographic errors on the sleeve but these really don't seem to matter in the end. All in all something that is original and unique and a real gem amongst all the usual stuff. I just hope that non-musicians can appreciate it as much as I did. 9/10 Robin Thompson.
AUDIO ADRNALINE : Until My Heart Caves In. (Forefront Records FFD63758)
This is a typical Audio Adrenaline CD, High energy guitar led rock from start to finish. The title track is an excellent worship song, and the following track "King" reminds me a bit of Delireous with the way that the guitar line runs through the verse. Actually there are quite a few Delirious like guitar lines on this CD, although. on the whole the music on this album has much more bite. Every track has something going on that's a bit different from the previous one, so it's quite easy to listen to it without getting bored. The one track that is a bit unexpected is a cover of "Your Love Has Lifted Me Higher" which if I remember correctly was a hit for Rita Coolidge about a hundred years ago, or back in the late seventies anyway. I never really thought of this as a worship song before to be honest, but it does seem to work quite well. All in all I reckon that this is a pretty good CD for anyone who likes Rock worship with no frills attached. In fact the only grouch is the insert which is one of those single sheets folded several times rather than a booklet, and it's on really thin paper that catches on those little plastic lugs every time you try and get it out , I reckon it will get ripped to shreds really quickly, but I guess that it's not really detracting from the music is it, so perhaps I shouldn't mention it. 9/10 Andy Sayner.
MARGARET BECKER, KRISTYN GETTY & JOANNE HOGG : New Irish Hymns 4. Kingsway : KMCD2650)
Here we are, then, with the 4th release of this series. I must admit, that I thought the last album was sounding a little tired so I wasn't sure what to expect this time. What you do get, is a collection of 12 songs that range from the power ballad sound of "The Power of the Cross", to the worshipful "Speak O Lord". "Your Glory Be Ever Known" has a typical Irish/celtic feel to it, but the song is rather short in length. "When Trials Come" lends more than a passing nod to the tune of "Be Thou My Vision", while "Light of God" commands great respect as a hymn. The vocal talents of the three singers are unquestionable, but I do think that Keith Getty is slowly running out of ideas. "Every Promise" shows that the man can diversify with his sound, a slow march which tells you to stand on every promise of God's word. I have a minor moan about the printed lyrics, which are almost ureadable, being of red print on gold background. 7/10
DIMITRI : Natural High. (www.dimitri-online.com)
Dimitri are a funky outfit from Devon, and have achieved national distribution for their album via Integrity Music. The album has already reached number 4 on the Crossrhythms Chart, and has received much airplay from various radio stations in the UK. At their smoothest, the band sounds like Simply Red, but when they up the tempo, it's more on a level with Jamiroqui. And, as Jason Kay is to Jamiroqui, so lead singer Jimi K seems to be the focal point of Dimitri. He writes and sings all the songs, and predominantly features on all of the website photographs. The title track talks of the natural feeling you get when Jesus sets your heart free, and it's one of the funkier sounds on the album. "Traveller" tells of life being a journey, and it's a really smooth sound with a lovely saxophone break. The saxophone returns to the fore on what I'd call a chill out number, that being "Can't Stop Crying", which also features some nice guitar work. The album finishes with a totally different sound to everything else on the album. "Save Me" is a great song, about crying out to God. Without wishing to sound too cliché, if you like the music of their secular counterparts, then Dimitri will satisfy your musical hunger. 8/10.
LOWER THAN THE ANGELS - Greg Adkins (www.gregadkinsmusic.com)
In October 2003, Greg Adkins was at a crossroads. He hadn't written a song in nearly three years, and he was on the verge of giving up music altogether. Then one night while walking his dogs, everything changed. "I knew I needed either to give writing a fair chance and really pour myself into it, or else give it up completely. Produced by Andrew Osenga (Caedmon's Call), and featuring guest appearances from Andrew Peterson, Aaron Sands (Jars of Clay), Kenny Hutson (Vigilantes of Love), and Marcus Myers (Silers Bald), it's a thoroughly pleasing mix of acoustic and electric. The song that had the greatest impact on me on first listen is 'Be The Body'; the message is similar to 'If We Are The Body' by Casting Crowns, because it's a plea to folks to take their Christian faith out of the church and into the real world, and use it to make a difference. The other song that hit the spot was 'Are You Out There Tonight', the first of those 52 songs to be written. I've spent a few nights on the road driving long distances, and it can be pretty lonely, so it's comforting to know that there's someone there keeping an eye on things. I've been encouraged and amazed lately to discover so many independent artists making excellent music, and Greg Adkins is one of them. Worth investigating. 8/10 Trevor Kirk
BETHANY DILLON : Imagination. (Sparrow : SPD 73905)
Bethany Dillon is a 17 year old girl from Bellefontaine, Ohio. She released her self titled debut album in 2004 and won critical acclaim for her songwriting. The theme of the album is an invitation to look at life with a fresh perspective, but I'm not sure that she really achives her ideal. I found most of the song pleasant enough, but I kept waiting for one that would take my breath away and set the album alight. Sadly, that didn't happen and, instead, I was left with a collection of very mediocre songs. Perhaps the best song on the album is "All That I Can Do", a song about realizing when you need more than your own strength to do things. It's a song that could well rate high on the charts, given enough exposure. "My Love Hasn't Grown Cold", is quite melancholy and I wasn't impressed at all, neither was I by "Vagabond". Bethany has quite a nice voice, but I really felt that the songs did little to grab my attention. 4/10.
IONA (Live): Bright Heaven's Sun (Open Sky Records OPENVP7CD)
This double CD is a re-release of Iona's 1997 recording (live as the title suggests). I was amazed to see there were only 18 tracks on a double CD, but when you realise how long a lot of the tracks are, the reasons are more than clear - they're huge, highlighted by a version of the timeless hymn "When I Survey" lasting just over 14 minutes! What a version it is though...best track on the album. The style is what I'd label "mature Celtic", so don't be expecting anything remotely like Enya as I was. Tracks are largely instrumental which leaves it difficult to tell where 1 song finishes & the next starts unless you intently stare at the CD player's display. Everything is written by Iona with some words lifted from Celtic writings, but as lyrics are sparse you'd be hard-pushed to realise the Christian content. Musically it's superb & I admire their stamina maintaining the quality & energy throughout such long tracks. After listening to this, I certainly wouldn't turn down an invitation to see them live but I doubt I would rush to buy the next release. 6/10 Simon Redfern
TELECAST : Eternity is Now. (bec : BED73986)
This album has been re-released, along with a number of other albums, in a series entitled Re:Commended. I've not heard of Telecast before but research has shown that when it was first released, this album got as high as No.5 in the top selling albums on iTunes last year. All the songs come from the pen of Josh White who, I assume, is also the lead singer. Telecast seem to be a contemporary praise band and, therefore the music deviates little from the safe theme of God and His love. The sound is very much in the mould of UK band Snow Patrol although saying that, "Close to You" is very west coast American in style. "Release the Deep" says that "Jesus, you're all I ever need", and it has good riffs to make it pleasing to the ear. "Absolution" is a slower and uneventful song, while "Fade into You" plods along like relentlessly, but getting nowhere. Again, I felt little inspiration from any of the songs. Crossrhythms rated this song as a 9/10, but I'm afraid I can't give it more than 4/10.
TOBY MAC : Renovating Diverse City. (Forefront : FFD11228)
I've not really enjoyed anything that Toby Mac has released in recent years, and I'm sorry to say that this new release fails to alter my opinion. The music comes across as hip hop but with some Rn'B thrownin for good measure. I suppose that at it's best, it sounds a lot like Eminem. "The Slam" is one such song but I've not the faintest idea just what it's all about. Toby keeps on repeating the phrase "This is the slam" but that's as far as I understand. There's one bright spot, for me, that returns to his heady days with DC Talk. "Burn For You" is a quality song and wouldn't have sounded out of place on the brilliant "Jesus Freak" album. "Gone" features some Oasis style brit-pop singing but I simply loathed the karaoke style of "Intruding Again" which features an annoying child rapping over the top of the track. Although not a fan of Enimem, several tracks do stand up well to his single releases and therefore, I guess this album could be worth you while. Not one for me though. 5/10
VARIOUS : Wow Hits 2006. (Kingsway : SPD11247)
Here we have a double CD labelled 'Gold' and 'Bronze' containing '30 of the year's top Christian artists and hits'. Three 'bonus tracks' actually make the total 33. The two CDs turn out to be quite different. 'Gold' gets off to a good start with 'Voice of Truth' by Casting Crowns - nice sound, good lead vocal, smoothly produced, starting quietly, building into a memorable hook. The only real stand out on 'Gold' however, is the excellent Bebo Norman track 'Nothing without you'. 'Bronze' tends to be more 'rocky', with more variety. Best tracks here are Barlowgirl's 'Mirror' (with a Michelle Tumes-sounding piano-led intro), Tobymac's 'Atmosphere', Relient K's 'Be my escape', the David Crowder*Band's 'Here is our King', Bethany Dillon's 'All that I can do', Superchick's 'Pure', and the Josh Bates closer 'Perfect Day'. On 'Gold', much of the content sounds too similar to the opener. Many of the artists may well be talented and individual, and there are some good songs here, but such songwriting and performance talents seem to have been 'processed out' by the somewhat formulaic production approach so that, regretfully, these special giftings from God have been lost along the way. When are such artists going to be revealed as the Coldplays, the Athletes, the K T Tunstalls, the Katie Meluas and Keanes of CCM? So, 'Gold' for background, 'Bronze' for more rewarding listening. Overall 8/10. Dave Deeks.

Prayer Table

FOR YOUR PRAYERS

As reported in last month's NFN, MARK LOWRY had to undergo surgery on his kneecap following a motorcycle accident.  His motorbike collided with a car that stopped abruptly in front of him, his knee took the full force of the crash.  He is recovering but would still value your prayers.

Please pray for the family and friends of popular Southern gospel pianist ANTHONY BURGER, who played for the successful Gaither Homecoming shows and earned Dove Award nominations for his albums of instrumental music. Anthony collapsed and died on stage while performing on a Gaither Homecoming cruise. He was 44.

Please keep ERNIE ASHWORTH and his wife BETTYE in your prayers.  Bettye, who is still recovering from lung cancer, had a serious fall recently.  She suffered a broken pelvis and hip.  She is now settled at home and receiving physiotherapy.

Your prayers would be gratefully received by the daughters of Hank Williams Jnr. HOLLY and HILARY were travelling to a funeral in Louisiana when their car was involved in a serious accident. Holly suffered various broken bones, but Hilary's situation is critical and she has been put on a ventilator.
