School children in the West Midlands have 'adopted' a Birmingham Royal Ballet dancer.
Four junior schools in Birmingham (including a school for children with Special Needs) are taking part in the project aimed at helping the pupils with their school studies.
Each of the schools 'adopts' a Birmingham Royal Ballet dancer and become involved in a series of activities which are designed so as to give the pupils an insight into the life of a dancer. The children correspond with their chosen dancer on a regular basis throughout the term, developing language and letter writing skills. As the dancers are currently in Japan, the pupils receive postcards and letters from them describing Japanese language and culture.
The children also get to find out about a dancer's workload as well as details about what they do in their spare time. They will learn about the preparation that a dancer undertakes before a performance and how life 'on the roadt touring with an international Ballet Company compares to life at home.
Those involved also receive a backstage tour, dance and drama workshops, design workshops, a dancer visit, a lecture demonstration, they see a performance of The Nutcracker and take part in a question and answer session with their 'adopted' dancer after the performance.
