Us Play Bridge at Ham House Would you like to begin playing bridge in a friendly environment? If so come and join the bridge group at historic Ham House & Garden in Richmond-upon-Thames, Surrey. We meet by kind invitation of the National Trust in the 17th-century Orangery Cafe. Here are the sessions offered for 2012: Bridge for Absolute Beginners This will be a formal 6-week course to introduce to the basics of bridge. The course assumes no prior knowledge. We start with the mechanics of bridge, the basics of card play and how to value your hand correctly. The concept of bidding is introduced and the need for a structured bidding system. The bidding system used is the Standard English (or ‘Acol’) system. Course fee £60 (NT members/£85 others incl. admission]. Please email for full details and registration form. Basic Bridge Practice On Monday afternoons we play basic rubber bridge. In these supervised practice sessions you will join a foursome and play bridge under the watchful eye of an experienced tutor. You will be able to ask for support and advice at any stage and you will be told the bridge reasons for any advice given. Each session is standalone and as such there is no need to pre-book and you only need pay for the sessions you attend. The bridge fee is £7.00 per person per session. Gentle Duplicate Bridge On Wednesday afternoons we play gentle Duplicate Bridge. This is the form of bridge played in nearly all clubs these days, where you vie as teams of two to get a better results from the same cards as players at other tables. Each pairs plays a series of deals in this fashion and the pair that does best overall are the winners. If you have never played duplicate before this is where to start. All necessary help and support will be available with some coaching permitted as you grapple with the conventions that are useful in duplicate bridge. After each weekly session a results email is circulated usually including a bridge teaching tip based on the deals played. Each session is standalone and as such there is no need to pre-book and you only need pay for the sessions you attend. The bridge fee is £7.00 per person per session. |

| All these sessions are led by Ned Paul, a well-known full time professional bridge teacher who runs clubs and playing groups in several parts of London. About Your Tutor Ned Paul is a full-time professional bridge teacher and a member of the English Bridge Union Teachers Association. He is the principal of two of London's more friendly duplicate clubs, Putney Bridge Club and the Ruff Bridge Club, Camden. He has taught bridge at numerous clubs in London and elsewhere. is free parking opposite the entrance to Ham House (walk to the house approx 400
yards) and designated disabled parking within the grounds. Buses 371 and 65 from
Kingston or Richmond pass nearby. Click

at the gate Joining The Course To join the beginning course advance booking is neccessary. Email for a registration form. For the other sessions no advance booking is necessary and you are welcome just to show up on the day.
