news update:
billy's babes are champions
Michael DickinsonUnited's first team may not have had much to cheer about this season - but the youth team have plenty to celebrate.

Billy Barr's Brunton Babes clinched the North West Youth Alliance Merit League after a nailbiting end to the season.

Their 2-0 win over Bury last Friday put them in with a chance of winning the title, but they had to sweat on the outcome of Rochdale's game against Macclesfield the next day.

The Yorkshire side's 2-1 defeat meant Carlisle topped the league on goal difference. Forward Michael Dickinson (above) and midfielder Andrew Mitchell grabbed United's goals in the 2-0 win. Barr, the former first-team captain who was appointed youth coach earlier this year, said: "Keeping clean sheets has been the real factor in winning the league. We kept five clean sheets in seven games. We didn't play that well against Bury but it was enough to win the league. They were bottom of the league but were a very hard working, organised side."

How the Football League Youth Alliance works
The league consists of 53 clubs, divided into North and South and then split into six regional conferences within those two divisions. Each club will play within their own conference, once at home and once away. At the end of the first phase, six "merit" divisions - three in the North and three in the South - will be created based on the results of the matches in the first phase. The premier division in each area will be determined by taking the top three clubs from each regional conference within their area who then play each other once, either home or away. Divisions One and Two in each area will be determined on the same basis. At the end of the second phase the club having the largest number of points in each division will be declared the champions.

United's home games take place either on the training pitch adjacent to the East Stand or at St. Aidan's School on Saturday mornings. All games kick off at 11 am unless otherwise stated.
