Singin'
The Blues - Neil Nixon
 |
Excellent. The best book written
about Carlisle United in the last 5 years. In
fact, the ONLY book written about them in the
last 5 years! This is the story of a love/hate
relationship going back 30 years. Almost a
marriage, if you like. Neil Nixon is a West
Cumbrian who started going to watch Carlisle
because Workington were just too crap an option
to contemplate. It would be churlish to accuse
him of being a glory hunter although no doubt
some diehard Reds fans would like to think that.
Neil grew up with the Blues, watching from the
Boys' pen in the Warwick Road End and later would
travel round the country to see them after he'd
moved away from the area. He recounts his passion
for all things Blue, including his appreciation
for the misunderstood genius that was Stan Webb
and the unconventional presence of Paul Bannon.
Whilst not every player who ever wore a blue
shirt was loved as much (Mike Graham comes in for
some heavy stick), there is a strong identity
running through this book that any hard core fan
will recognise instantly. Neil isn't a
24-hour-a-day mad fan who would go so far as
painting his house in the club colours or naming
his children after the players, but he still
retained a strong affinity for the club through
many years and several major distractions, such
as girls, drink, drugs and marriage. Neil shows
his sense of humour by including a nightmare
scenario before every chapter which features
various characters inside and outside the walls
of Brunton Park. A great read. Once you've picked
it up, you really can't put it down again.

| Giant
Killers (Win 95, 98) |
A new game released earlier this
year which I have a free copy of because I helped
them put together the CUFC data! Unfortunately
some of the players signed last year were missing
and were replaced with totally fictitious
characters. However, a simple to play and
enjoyable game. Not quite as all-engrossing as
CM2, but not a bad effort. Aimed apparently at
younger (i.e. teenage) managers.
