United won the Third Division title with a club-record 91 points as they blazed a trail at the top of the table from November until May.

The season also saw United reach Wembley for the first time in club history as they battled through to the final of the Auto Windscreens Shield. United had begun the season as joint favourites with Preston for the championship, and the signings of David Currie and Derek Mountfield in the summer were to prove crucial in adding bite to the squad who had come so close to promotion the previous season.

A new club record of nineteen league games without defeat which lasted from September until February sent United well clear of the pack. Their 3-0 defeat of nearest rivals Bury over Christmas put them 11 points ahead and a 2-1 victory over Walsall in March, when David Reeves grabbed two late goals, virtually sealed the title.

The sale of skipper Simon Davey to Preston in February came as a shock, but the squad was soon patched up with the arrivals of Steve Hayward from Derby and Warren 'Sumo' Aspinall on loan from Bournemouth.

The trip to Wembley for the AWS Final ended in extra-time golden-goal defeat to Paul Tait and Birmingham City. However, United's marvellous travelling army of 26,000, though outnumbered by the Brummies, did their city proud and provided ample proof of the club's enormous potential.

Even a late run of three defeats in five games failed to take the shine off a thoroughly successful season. Mick Wadsworth was deservedly named Third Division Manager of the Year whilst David Reeves knocked in 25 goals to become the first Carlisle player for twelve years to bag 20 goals in a season.
