guess I'm a bit of a nerd... I've been into computers since I taught myself basic from a TRS-80 manual when I was 13. My first
computer was a Sinclair
ZX80 (where I could finally try out my basic for real, and where I struggled with
machine code). Next was a ZX81
and then a Spectrum. Since then I've had an ACT Sirius (which I taught myself to program
in Turbo Pascal); an Apricot Xen-i 386 (which I used to learn C); a home-brew 486-25
(which helped me learn about building PCs, C++, Windows SDK programming, writing
multi-user games, and UNIX); a Sony Playstation
(just for fun, though a Yaroze was very
tempting for a while!);
and finally, to keep my contracting skills up to date, my home network of a Dual Pentium II 333,
a Pentium II 266 and a Dell Inspiron PIII 500 - for when I'm on the
move... The current house is full of gadgets (I just like
expensive toys), and I get nervous if I don't have a compiler installed on the machine
that I'm working on! My current favorite toy is our DVD player. When I'm not being totally sad with computers I like to cook, ski, juggle, read, and do all of the things that normal people like to do... I've just started learning to play electric guitar (when do your fingers stop hurting?) Perhaps there is hope for me after all... We've just bought a shell apartment and I've spent some time going "back to my roots" doing some of the building work. The whole project is covered here - yes, I know it's rather sad that my new house has a website of its own, but it does make it much easier to tell people how the work is coming along. I'm currently working as a senior software consultant with Commerzbank in London, and working from JetByte's office for anyone else who wants me - take a look at my CV/resume and if you feel like offering me a job then drop me a line! I used to manage the family building and property businesses, but I much preferred the time I spent cutting code so made the switch to full-time programming... I'm also a qualified plumber ("what you need boy is a trade"), but I'm far more comfortable with a mouse in my hand than a spanner! Besides, software engineering isn't that much different to building... I now have a blog at www.lenholgate.com. |
