The Incas

By the time of the civil war between Huascar and Atahualpa (circa 1530), the Inca kings had ruled for over 11 generations. The 9th Inca King, Pachacuti Inca Yupanque or "Earthshaker", greatly expanded the empire outwards from Cuzco, reaching as far as modern-day Ecuador in the north and Santiago, Chile in the south.

The history of the early Inca kings and the creation of their empire, its towns and its laws are well documented in books suggested in the Further Reading section. The Incas who had an immediate impact on the Spanish Conquest are as follows:

Inca Huayna-Capac
Huscar Inca (?-1532)
Atahualpa Inca (?-1533)
Tupac Huallpa Inca (?-1533)
Manco Inca (1516-1545)
Paullu Inca (1518-1549)
Sayri-Tupac Inca (1535-1560)
Titu Cusi Inca (1530-1571)
Tupac Amaru Inca (1544-1572)
