Welcome to Incas & Conquistadors!
This website has been created out of a personal fascination for the mighty and mysterious Inca Empire that ruled much of South America from 1438 to 1532.
Whether you have stumbled across this website on your travels through the internet, whether you are preparing for a trip to South America or whether you have always wanted to know more about the Incas, this website will hopefully inform, intrigue and answer such questions as:
How did an army of 37 horsemen and 106 foot-soldiers conquer a mighty empire that stretched over 2,500 miles from modern-day Ecuador to Chile?
What happened between the discovery of the Inca Empire in 1526 and the final, ruthless extermination of the Inca rulers in 1572?
Who were the key characters in the struggles between the Incas and the Conquistadors, and what were the motives for their actions?
How did an independent Inca state exist within Spanish-ruled Peru for 35 years?
What tragedies and treacheries finally led to the downfall of the Incas?
At present, this website does not attempt to answer such questions as "How did the Incas live before the arrival of the Spanish?" or "What Inca culture and customs survive to this day?" The Internet Links section provides links to some websites that answer these and other questions.
The Further Reading section gives suggestions for those wishing to learn more about the Incas and Peru. Of particular note is John Hemming's "The Conquest of the Incas" which provided inspiration and valuable information for this website.
Finally, please take a few moments to visit the Feedback section of Incas & Conquistadors to let us know your comments.
