A personal message from Ian Roberts,
Chief Executive, Poole Harbour Commissioners.
What do we do?
* Maintain the
shipping channels by dredging and marking with navigational aids such as buoys etc
* Provide a pilotage service for ships
visiting the harbour
* Allocate areas of the harbour for yacht
moorings
* Licence works around the harbour (e.g.
construction of jetties, etc.,)
* Coordinate resources in the event of oil or
chemical pollution in the harbour, or an emergency
* Provide a 24-hour manned Harbour Control
Office
* Maintain and develop port facilities to
retain existing customers and encourage new ones
* Offer a full range of cargo handling
services
To whom are we accountable?
A variety of people and organisations. These include the Government (because we
are a statutory body),
and harbour users (ranging from the largest ferry operator to the 'weekend sailor')
The Commissioners regularly consult with local and District Councils, Southern Sea
Fisheries District
Committee, Poole Yachting Association and a wide range of environmental and business
organisations.
The Harbour Commissioners meet at least once a month and copies of the minutes
of their meetings
are passed to the CounciIs. Copies are also sent to Poole Library for members of the
public to read, if they wish.
Poole Harbour is unique - there is a huge range of interests -
commercial, recreational, military and
environmental and all must be able to operate together for the common good.
It is the Commissioner's job to achieve this aim. Put simply, we want to see a
viable port bringing
trade and tourism to the area, whilst at the same time retaining the vast majority of the
harbour
for those who wish to pursue their recreational activities.
