This table shows the population of each local authority in Scotland as at July 1998. The figures are taken from the 1998 mid-year estimates prepared by the General Register Office for Scotland (GRO).
The figures are rounded and given in thousands of people. This means that, for example, the population of Aberdeen City - which is given in the table as "213.1" - in fact has a population of 213,100 people (to the nearest 100).
The total population of Scotland at July 1998 was 5,120,000. See also 'Scotland's Localities', my page giving the population of Scotland's cities, towns and villages. A variety of other population statistics relating to Scotland can be found in the soc.culture.scottish FAQ.
