The Tanfield Railway at the village of Marley Hill was in its infancy in the mid 70's but provided an accessible location for drawing and painting only a little more than a mile away from Brian Sefton's home.

The railway's collection is one of industrial locomotives and has been described at that time as "the Barry of the North". As well as generating several sketchbooks full of studies from the Marley Hill site, Brian also donated paintings to the railway for auction to generate funds for locomotive resoration.

The artist's son, Matthew, now lives directly behind the Tanfield Railway site in Marley Hill and his daughter Charlotte is a regular visitor. More information on the railway and steaming days and dates can be found on the Tanfield Railway web site.
