July 2003
A selection of around 15 of Brian Sefton's locomotive paintings are on show at the Darlington Railway Centre and Museum, North Road Station, Darlington, County Durham. The paintings will be exhibited at the Museum for around the next six months and a selection of limited edition prints will also be available to purchase. Why not pay the museum a visit if you're in the area.

This site is a showcase for the steam railway art of Brian Sefton, a professional artist living and working in Newcastle upon Tyne in the North East of England.

Originally from Bradford, Yorkshire, Brian's interest in steam locomotives began in the early fifties in and around Bradford and Leeds, where much of his free time was spent roaming the engine sheds of the area. Graduating from Kings College, Newcastle with a degree in Fine Art in 1960, he has maintained his passion for locomotives, painting and drawing at locations across the United Kingdom whilst, until retiring recently, teaching at the University of Sunderland.

At the heart of Brian's collection of steam railway work (the majority of which until now has not been seen by the general public) is a series of over 75 paintings depicting the closing Years of Woodhams' Scrapyard, Barry, South Wales, painted during the period 1986-1989. These paintings capture magnificently the elegance, dignity and power of each locomotive, in spite of their decay and corrosion. In addition to the Barry series, the collection also features examples of locomotives from many heritage railways around the United Kingdom, such as the Tanfield and North York Moors railways.

BlackFive aims to produce a series of limited edition, superb quality lithographic prints of paintings from the collection, available to purchase to the general public for the first time. Three paintings are currently available and details can be found on the Limited Edition Prints page.

BlackFive is very much a family business. The artist's son, Matthew and his business partner Colin Townsend are responsible for the design of this web site and the marketing and production of BlackFive's work through their creative design agency Red Hot Poker and we are keen for the content of this site to be worth spending an hour or so of your time reading and viewing the artwork, as well as a source for purchasing prints.

We welcome your questions, comments and suggestions regarding the site and Brian Sefton's work at matt@red-hot-poker.com. Enjoy your visit!
