Bonington to go back to Sepu Kangri

London 07 Mar 98 Returning after the huge snowfalls of last season, Chris and his team have been tempted back to attempt this isolated giant. If last year's website was anything to go by, lots of background info from Chris Bonnington and good updates as weather allows. For Chris Bonington's web site and latest information. Latest: So far Chris has told us that the expedition will be in August 1998. Watch this space!

North Pole Unsupported - the last great polar goal

Resolute Bay Mar 98 The two Royal Marines, Sgt Sean Chapple and Cpl. Alan Chambers, have been forced to abandon their attempt on being the first unsupported team to reach the Geographic North Pole. The two men left Ward Hunt Island to begin their epic march but found the batteries on their radio and navigation equipment were not re-charging. This bitter blow has obviously disappointed both men who were only ten days into their attempt. The Polarwatch site is still worth a visit.

North Pole'98- Supported - The Grand Slam

David Hempleman-Adams and Rune Gjeldnes failed to reach the Geographic North Pole unsupported last season. This time the British-Norwegian duo have decided to take fewer chances. Spring tides (w/e 13 Mar) have caused substantial ice movements and made the going tough. An air drop is scheduled for this week(w/e 20th Feb). Good Luck Dave & Rune. If David Hempleman-Adams reaches the pole he will have achieved what no man has achieved before, having climbed the highest mountains of all seven continents as well as reaching both poles.

Norwegian Success

Scott Base 18th January 1997
Borg Ousland has successfully completed his solo trans Antarctica attempt becoming the first man to do so. He covered 2845 kilometres in an amazing 64 days, at times covering 135 miles a day using a Paraglide Kite attached to a belt harness and wearing skis. The use of the 'para-wing' is an area that Briton - Sir Ranulph-Fiennes, whose attempt earlier this season ended with a medical emergency, felt he should have taken more seriously in his attempt.

Queen Maud Land Expedition

A Norwegian team, led by Antarctic veteran, Ivar Tolleffson, have successfully completed their climbing expedition to the Birger Bergersen Mountains in the South Rondane of Queen Maud Land. Their objective was to climb an area of unusual pinnacles. One outstanding feature, nick-named 'The Horn' was the primary goal of the climbing expedition. More than a kilometre of sheer rock face, the team used wall tactics, hanging camps and a constant haul of snow to each camp to supply water. The summit was reached on the 6th January 1997.
