Codes of Practice
- 1. To follow the country code at all times.
- 2. Follow the approved route. Stay on the path, avoid short-cuts and avoid walking on verges.
- 3. Take all litter away from the mountains and dispose of it responsibly.
- 4. On the mountain consider other users.
- 5. Take special care not to start fires, especially in dry periods. The most
common causes of fires on moorland and woodland are;
i) discarded cigarette ends, ii)
discarded matches, iii) broken bottles and glass, iv) camping or cooking stoves.
- 6. Use approved parking areas. Do not park in passing places, field entrances etc.
- 7. When parked-up at any of the mountains consider the environment, both emissions of
exhaust and noise can be an irritant. Do not leave your engines running. Generators are
discouraged for the same reasons.
- 8. Toilet facilities do not exist at present at Scafell. Use motorway services prior to Scafell.
Leaving any waste as a mark of your visit to any wilderness area is unnecessary.
- 9. Communications are an important part of mountain safety. Please assess your position if
setting up a relay or base station. You may be close to someone's house, a campsite
or other drivers trying to get some rest. During the night hours keep all noise to a minimum.
- 10. All participants must abide by the law and legislation pertaining to highways & byways.
The mountains of Scotland, England and Wales are beautiful and seemingly indestructible but
at the same time they are specific and fragile environments. These conditions of existence are
easily disrupted by the introduction of outside elements. Remember, an insignificant amount of
damage by one is multiplied many-fold when numbers of visitors to these areas are increased. Whilst much is being done to improve the 'way' it is still
each team's responsibility to ensure their brief visit to the mountains is not damaging.
