Expeditions & Endeavours International
8th Raid Gauloises Lesotho, South Africa 7th February 1997. Raid organiser announced the
country of the 9th Raid Gauloises competition. Gerard Fusil, speaking at the end of the ten days Raid, declared that the Philipines
would be the location of the next competition, probably in April 1998. A great web site for the initiated and newbies alike. A full, day by
day account with some amusing translations from this largely French organisation. A comprehensive site.
Eco-Challenge Adventure Sport. This is an awesome test of stamina and sheer bloody-mindedness. To underline the toughness of the 1997
event, held in British Columbia in '97 and in Morroco during September '98. The organisers are still looking for teams so go on, have a look at
one of the best websites on the Internet.
13th Marathon des Sables is currently under way in the Saharan vastness of Southern Morroco. Claimed to be the toughest
footrace on earth, the event covers 150 blistering miles, over six self-sufficient days. Now on!
Boags Three Peaks Race based on the British version, this Australian Challenge takes place every year in Tasmania. The 1997 event gets under
way around Easter. A good site with plenty of contact and race information.
70 Wild Miles Glencoe Scotland This event takes place on June 6th 1998 and includes a 47 mile cycle, a 10 mile canoe and finally a 13 mile run.
All in aid of Cancer Research the organiser is still on the look out for solos and relays. Gelert Barmouth to Fort William Three Peaks Yacht Race. This is the original version of the Boags. The Lowe Alpine Western Isles Challenge. Lowe Alpine have weighed in to help salvage this highly competitive event. Being held in May 1998, details are available form their website.
The British Fire Service Three Peaks Challenge.
A land-based challenge which requires teams of four or five to climb Ben Nevis, Scotland, Scafell, England and Snowdon, Wales
inside a 24 hour period. Public service teams welcome. Run under strict environmental and safety guidelines, with staggered starts and set time limits between mountains to discourage rallying.
West Highland Way Race. A real ball-breaker of 95 miles from Glasgow to Fort William. Starts Saturday and finishes Sunday with an overnight. Vehicular back-up essential.
Manx Mountain Marathon One of the classic fell races of the year. A 30 mile race of runners and walkers in teams of three.
Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon. One of the main mountain challenges in the UK. This two day event requires self-sufficiency and skilled map reading as well as fitness. Not
to be taken lightly. Course changes every year, one thing is for sure, it takes place somewhere in Cumbria. 1997 event was in the Helvellyn/Fairfield area. Information on the Lake District are available on the Fell and Rock Climbing Club website
Lowe Alpine Mountain Marathon. Another of the main mountain challenges in the UK. The event is in the Scottish Highlands. A two day self-sufficient marathon which this year took place on the Hebridean island of Jura, covering mountainous
