The Challenge Manual

Now acknowledged by one of the biggest challenge organisers as their official guide, the British Fire Service Three Peaks Challenge are so impressed by the Challenge Manual that they include a copy of it with every entry pack. This comprehensive book walks the reader through their challenge attempt from beginning to hopefully successful end.

Written in straightforward but informative language The Challenge Manual covers a range of topics from team to individual organisation, to the 'minimum impact' approach that should be taken to the environment. There is useful information on recognising and avoiding the many pitfalls that could overcome anyone in a challenge environment. Information on risk assessment, safety and survival procedures are coupled with a comprehensive appendix of additional information and resources.

Primarily aimed at long-distance walkers, the Manual will also be of use to organisers, team leaders and support teams. Charity walkers and first-timers will also find an encompassing range of relevant information on preparation and organisation.

With a plethora of challenge walks to choose from this timely guide has much to commend it. No photographs to distract from the central message of 'minimum impact', the Challenge Manual threads a methodical route through team organisation, equipment, personal preparation and survival. A useful handbook for team leaders, support teams and event organisers. Wildernet 84pp. Distributed by Cordee

The Author

Guy Newham

After a 'wild' childhood steeped in the great outdoors of Cornwall and Dartmoor, fate led him to the mountains of Scotland. "My first job was to ski the Cairngorm on a pair of 210cm skis and a bloody big shovel and do one of two things, either shovel snow off the uplift tracks or shovel snow onto the uplift tracks."

Through the often harsh winters spent daily on the mountains Guy picked up the skills of winter survival. Skiing (an accomplished skier at that) and mountaincraft was learnt from men and women whose livelihood and passion were the mountains of Scotland. Inevitably the Alps were next and after three years at Tignes as a Ski Guide he went west. The Canadian Rockies, the volcanoes of Central America, the Algerian Saharan desert of North Africa and the Australian outback have all made their impressions.

"I became a sort of wilderness junkie but after twenty years the time came to come home and get a proper life." He now runs a small publishing company; works on a number of specialist journals, one of which he is editor; sits ona charity working group aimed at producing national guidelines on 'minimum impact' in the wild countryside and is Co-Director of the Fire Service National Three Peaks event. He has written features and articles and was responsible for the 1988 Australian Bicentennary exhibition 'Echoes from Distant Hills' a story of displacement from the Hebrides during the 19th Century to Australia. He still spends as much time as he can exploring beyond the borders!
