THE HISTORY OF THE PRIORY STUD

Pic: Priory Pink Petticoats wins the Supreme Championship, Mountain and Morland - Christine Green receives the trophy from Princess Margaret
The Priory Stud was established in 1946 by Christine Green (then Christine Eyre), a graduate of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons with the acquisition of Priory Pippin for 11 guineas at Beaulieu Road Pony Auction. This lovely liver chestnut mare won many championships in hand and under saddle. At the age of 24 years her last year of glory came with a win in the New Forest class at the Royal Richmond Show with foal at foot.
A year later Christine purchased Burton Starlight, a yearling colt at the Lyndhurst Stallion Show for £25 and thus established one of the most influential lineages in the breed's history.

Pic:Priory Sunlight
Pippin had 22 foals, the majority by Starlight including famous champions such as Priory Hatband out of Bandbox, exported as a foal to Denmark, and her most famous offspring, Priory Pink Petticoats, who was a champion in hand, under saddle (first winner of the New Forest Working Hunter Pony of the Year title) and as a brood mare - she was Supreme Champion of all breeds of pony at the Ponies of Britain and Royal Windsor Show.
Two further mares of exceptional quality, Rosina and Granite were purchased and won in hand and under saddle at the Breed and other national shows. 'Rosy' was a quite exceptional child's riding pony, bringing an even more kindly temperament to an already kindly family of ponies.

Burton Sunlight, Starlight's full brother was purchased to strengthen the line on the male side and was soon Champion Stallion at the Breed Show and, having been broken, before long was winning under saddle, jumping, hunting and competing in cross county events. With Pink Petticoats, their first male prodgeny was Priory Black Boots, again a breed champion under saddle and in hand, who sired a line of oustanding ponies. The last of Pink Petticoats' foals, Tickled Pink won the New Forest Ponies Supreme Championship at the Enthusiasts' Show at the tender age of 15 years.

The Priory line has formed the cornerstone of New Forest Pony breeding programmes in Australia, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Canada and the Netherlands. The stud's current stallion, Priory Prankster has started his career with flying colours becoming breed champion at the Bath & West Show and under saddle at Ponies UK, and throwing some very well made prodgeny that is already winning in the UK and overseas.
