Summer Holidays
Training at Balerno High School (Mondays and Wednesdays) continues up to the end of term....
... and resumes the first week back at school in August. If there is demand some of the coaches MIGHT run a couple of evenings during the summer holidays.
Training at Saughton on Thursdays (6.30 7.30) will continue throughout the summer holidays, and anyone can come along.
(Athletes with other coaches will have their own arrangements.)
The Jogging groups will continue on Wed evening (7.30 couch potatoes and proper runners all welcome) and Sunday mornings at 10.00 am.
Summer Star:Track at Balerno HS
The High School is planning to run a Star:Track programme during the week 11-15 August from 1.00 pm 3.00 pm. This is an excellent opportunity for younger members and friends to try a whole range of fun-based events. Look out for the programme and booking forms at Currie & Balerno HS.
Open Graded Meetings
Included in this Herald is information about the Open Graded meetings being held at Grangemouth and Livingston on some Wednesday nights during the summer. Open graded meetings are open to all on an individual basis (ie it is not team based with restrictions on the number of places per event).
This is YOUR chance to do the event or events YOU want to do!
As these are being held on nights when our coaches are already occupied, it is very much the responsibility of members and parents to organise attendance.
A few of our older members have already been along and been rewarded with some personal bests.
Welcome Back to Jenny Robertson
We're pleased to welcome back Jenny Robertson to active duty after a couple of years off whilst at college. Jenny was a top-quality junior sprinter and is now helping out at coaching on Wednesday evenings.
Christina to retire from coaching.
After several years of active duty as Coach, Committee Member, Team Manager and Athlete, Christina Graham will be retiring from active duty at the end of this season. Christina started, like most of us, when her children first joined the club as U11's, and has been a key part of our organisation for several years. In order to keep Wednesday (and Monday) night coaching going strong we really do need a fresh infusion of new parents to come on board, so the plea is to all our younger members to ask your parents to spend a bit of time helping out. If you would like to take the first steps in getting a coaching qualification, the club will pay the course fees. A series of courses for new coaches will be run by Scottish Athletics in the autumn.
Christina's departure also means we will have a vacancy for a team manager for the Forth Valley League next season, so now (at the club AGM) is the time to volunteer.
League Performance Medals
A reminder to everyone that Medals will be awarded for each League based on the points scored over all the meetings (taking into account any changes in the scoring system):
Last year's total + 30%: Gold Last year's total + 20%: Silver Last year's total + 10%: Bronze
Lop-sided season
This season has been a bit different with so many of the competitions finishing before the school holidays, but a reminder to all juniors (U15, U13 U11) that there will be one Forth Valley League meeting in the holidays on Saturday August 2nd. Performances in this League are well ahead of last year, so a commemorative medal for all who take part in this league is well within your grasp.
And a reminder to all the older girls and ladies (U13, U15, U17, Sen) that we have entered teams into the Monklands Cup on Sunday 27 July. Each age group has its own competition.
2002 Rankings
The Track & Field Rankings for 2002 have been published and a trawl through the book reveals the following listed performances by Harmeny athletes. Included is the ranking position for anyone who made the top five in in their event. Congratulation to Glyn Desport who topped the ranking in the Long Jump, and also made the top 15 in both the 200m and Hugh Jump.

Scottish Athletics League
Meeting 1, Coatbridge 27 April
Last year we found a few middle distance runners, but lost most of our sprinters. In the first match of the Men's League this year we had another two middle distance runners making their debut for us. Shaun Desport, although still an U17 has reached the required performance standard and is eligible to run the 800m against seniors. And what a good run it was too, with Shaun pulling away from the field in the home straight to win in the fast time of 2m 01.8 sec in fairly blustery conditions. Also making his debut for us was Jim Buick, who trains alongside us at Saughton on Thursday nights. We had a second victory in a middle distance race (and when was the last time that happened?!) when Tony Westbury showed the value of good pacing and "barrier" technique in the steeplechase as he gradually roped in a field who had all set off fairly quickly to win in 11m 23.8s. There are meant to be seven clubs in the league (so points scoring has reverted to that used for eight club leagues compared to the scoring system used last year), however Ross County (former Black Isle) failed to appear.
Provisional Result: 1 Victoria Park 324; 2 Whitemoss 322; 3 Giffnock North 318; 4 Lasswade 256; 5 Harmeny 128; 6 Dunfermline & W. Fife 90; (7 Ross County No show)
The points targets this year over three meetings are: 343 (bronze); 374 (silver) 405 (gold)
Forth Valley League Thursday 24th April 2003
The first of the league meetings proved to be a very enjoyable and very successful evening!! Many of the athletes were performing in competition for the first time and setting their targets for the season. Several of the seasoned performers were improving their PBs which augers well for the coming competitions!! Every team point is vital this season as if the athletes manage to improve on last seasons point total in each league they will be awarded a medal
- the colour dependent on the percentage of improvement. So each point an athlete can gain helps the team to that medal hopefully!! Last year our points total for this meeting was 281 and the total for the year was 857 (over 4 meetings), so we're well on the way!Final Result: 1. Falkirk 363.5 ; 2. Dunbar 334.5 ; 3. Linlithgow 318.5 ; 4. Harmeny 305 5. Dunfermline & W.F. 280; 6. Musselburgh 247 ; 7. E.W.M. 164.5.

Forth Valley League Thursday 22nd May 2003
Final Result: 1. Dunbar 383.5 ; 2. Linlithgow 340.5 ; 3. Falkirk 324 ; 4. Dunfermline & W.F. 285.5 ; 5. Harmeny 273 ; 6. Musselburgh 185.5 ; 7. E.W.M. 185.
After 2 meetings we are placed 4th with 578 points. This time last year we had only 467 points at this stage. If I`ve done the correct maths that is a 19.2% improvement which could mean at least a bronze medal for all competing athletes!!! Special mention for our new athletes competing for the first time: Alistair Young in the U11s 2 very strong competitive runs : The Ramsay family well earned valuable points particularly Andrew`s exciting run in the 800m: Graham Penman who made his impressive debut in the first meeting and continued this in the 800m: and a big well done to all the other athletes many of who did PBs and earned those extra points!! Here`s to the 3rd meeting and hopefully even greater points!!

Details have still to come through, but congratulations to Shaun Desport who finally shattered the two minute barrier for the 800m with a time of 1min58.8, and to Graham Penman who after only a few weeks of competitive running broke 25 sec for 200 with time of 24.9. Both are (or at least were..) club records.
Shaun's record only lasted a few days, when he ran a superb 1min 57.56s in the Open Graded at Grangemouth on 4 June.
A different type of record?
Philip Purves (now part of our Thursday evening squad) achieved a different type of personal record on Wed 4 June. After winning the Edinburgh Schools 1500m in a personal best time he went on to the Open Graded meeting at Grangemouth that evening and set a new PB in the 800m. Two PB's in a day is not that uncommon, but two in a day at different meetings is a bit different
Scottish East District Indoor Championships
