Introduction:

Live your world with Orange

What is WAP?

Wireless Application Protocol is the de facto world-wide standard for delivering internet type content to digital mobile phones and other wireless devices. It is pronounced WAP, as in "tap", not "top". :-)

In the not too distant future you will be able to use your mobile to order and pay for a wide range of services:

WAP Phones:

All phones currently available on Orange now include WAP browsers!

How to set up a Nokia 7110e or 6210e to access WAP through an alternative dial-up provider:

Simply enter the WAP address in the phone's bookmark listing and just select, you now don't need to use the "other sites" option, as Orange have taken the sensible decision to use just one portal with full and open internet access.

You can also use third party services to send and receive email using WAP. To do this you need to firstly sign up with Mail and News from a web browser, then proceed to our WAP homepage for the next step!

You can also access the internet through your own ISP, although this is likely to be more problematic than using Orange's dialup and gateway:

  • Select Menu 10-3 (Services - Settings), and choose one of four of the empty "sets" - do not replace your Orange standard settings!
  • "Edit" this setting entering the following details:
  • Homepage: www.wirefree.com/wap/index.wml
  • Connection Type: Continuous
  • Connection Security: Off
  • Bearer: Data
  • Dial-up Number: your ISP's regular dial-up number (POP)
  • IP address: The internet address of a WAP gateway, NOT a DNS server or your own IP address. Currently we know of two "open" gateways: 195.58.110.201 and 193.113.200.195 (many thanks to WAP freaks for this - see their site for more details and other settings)
  • Authentication Type: Normal
  • Data Call Type: Analogue mostly, unless you are using a digital POP with UUNET or Demon in which case select ISDN
  • Data Call Speed: 9600 (14400 will work late in 2000 hopefully)
  • User Name: your own ISP dial-up login name
  • Password: your own ISP dial-up password
  • Please note we do not guarantee any of these setting will work!!! Furthermore neither ourselves nor Orange will be able to offer any technical support. If you get stuck though please send an email, we will respond if we can.
  • Please let us know what you think of our WAP site, our public guestbook is here.

  • What have we left off?

If you want us to cover something in detail here about WAP please drop us an email and we will investigate!
