Nokia Orange 7110e

NEW I have heard the 7110 is unreliable?

The BBC Watchdog programme ran an article on 19/10/2000 which portrayed the 7110 in a very poor light. We do not think they were fair at all in their report. We depend on satisfying our customers for repeat business, and since the price drop in September the 7110 has become our best selling phone, and we have had only one phone returned in this period! We feel that statistic speaks for itself. The 7110 was the world's first WAP phone, and as such had a lot to live up to. It's also got a brand new Nokia menu system and 1000 phonebook entries and 50 text message spaces, quite an achievement. Inevitably with such a new design early software versions of the phone were not as good as they should have been, but for around the last 6 months the software available on all the new phones for sale has been generally very reliable and the bugs have been ironed out. If you purchase a 7110e with Orange Care then you are guaranteed an express replacement of a faulty phone within 24 hours, alternatively if you register with Club Nokia (free) you can take advantage of instant swap or repair at one of over 150 Nokia Service Centres throughout the UK. Nokia have always offered a free software upgrade to phone owners, within the first year of ownership and sometimes longer. So you can take your phone to a Nokia software service centre or send it back to Nokia for the latest software to be installed on your phone. You can even request that they back up and then restore all your personal details. (However, you should not rely on this so it is wise to try and back up details yourself first).

Overall, we think the 7110 is now a great product, and still offers an amazing package for a very good price. Remember that thanks to Orange's satisfaction guarantee if you are not completely satisfied with either the Orange service, or the Nokia 7110e you can return it back to us within 14 days for a full refund.

What about pre-pay?

Pre-pay tariffs are for first time users, or under 18s who cannot connect to a traditional monthly subscription. The 7110, being a top end phone will not therefore be available on prepay, if it were the unsubsidised pre-pay handset price would be in excess of £400. However, there are other Wap handsets now available on Just Talk.

Upgrades to this phone where you keep your existing Orange number are now freely available

Do I have to buy new accessories to use with it?

If you own a 51 or 61 series Nokia handset such as the nk402, nk702 or 6150 you will be able to use most of your current accessories, including the CARK-91 carkit. The only exceptions being all versions of Nokia Datasuite, DAU-9P data cable, and the 6150 belt-clip. Please note that due to the slider on the 7110 some accessories which plug in the base may get in the way of the slider, for that reason there is an updated version of the 51/61 series headset (HDC-9P) with a different shaped plug. Even with accessories such as this which may get in the way of the slider you should still be able to use them, but you will have to leave the slider open when plugged in. Please note that when using the 7110 in the carkit you must close the slider before removing the phone (otherwise your slider will fall off). Batteries from the 51 and 61 series phones can also be used with the 7110, and with the vibrating battery you will notice a particularly strong vibrate as the 7110 has this built in as well!

We have a list of available accessories for the 7110e here, including an affordable carry case and the original Nokia data cable for just £44.99, or a copy cable for just £24.99.

How can I transfer my existing mobile phone numbers to the 7110e?

If you are getting the 7110e to replace an existing Orange mobile phone you should be able to insert your old SIM into the phone, and select "Copy from SIM to Phone". Once you have your old SIM card memories on the 7110e you can put your new supplied SIM back in the 7110e. If you also have numbers stored on the phone memory of your old phone, after doing step one, place your new SIM into your old phone and select "Copy from Phone to SIM". Then repeat step one above. (Please note that not all Orange SIM cards or phones may allow this). We believe this will work fine with the Nokia 5.1, nk502, nk503,  nk702 and nk6150e.

Can I access other WAP sites?

Yes, you can now access external internet WAP content using Orange's standard WAP  settings. Partly as a result of pressure from Orange customers and views in the industry trade newspaper, Mobile News Orange have taken the excellent decision to open up their service for full internet access.
Instructions on how you can set up your phone for open net access are here

You can read the article written by Scott Allison for the December issue all about WAP in Mobile News.

How much does it cost to use WAP services?

From February 1st WAP data calls will be deducted from inclusive minutes, and subsequently charged at 5p per minute. This is regardless of whether you are viewing Orange's content or external WAP content through the second Orange dialup settings.

What is WAP?

Wireless Application Protocol is the de facto world-wide standard for delivering internet type content to digital mobile phones and other wireless devices.
It is pronounced WAP, as in "tap", not "top". :-)

What about Infra-Red data and fax?

The 7110 has a built in "modem" and does support infra-red data and fax calls with devices such as the Psion 5, 5mx, Palm III, Palm V, etc.
There is also an optional 9 pin D plug connecting cable available for interfacing with devices such as some PCs and laptops without infra-red ports.

How to set up a 7110e for full and unrestricted WAP internet access:

Simply enter the WAP address in the phone's bookmark listing and just select, you now don't need to use the "other sites" option, as Orange have taken the sensible decision to use just one portal with full and open internet access.

You can also use third party services to send and receive email using WAP. To do this you need to firstly sign up with Mail and News from a web browser, then proceed to our WAP homepage for the next step!

You can also access the internet through your own ISP, although this is likely to be more problematic than using Orange's dialup and gateway. You might want to do this if you have a free access number though:
