'alignment, breathing, relaxed power' | |||||
| This is now the fourth year that Wee Kee Jin is teaching White Crane
in the UK. Wee Kee Jin learned Fujian White Crane from Master Huang Sheng Shyan (alongside his Tai Chi) and is one of only four students to learn the complete system. We are fortunate that Wee Kee Kin is willing to teach it openly. One of the reasons Master Huang insisted that Wee Kee Jin learn White Crane was that it would shorten the usual time required to learn how to generate relaxed forces from 7 years to just 4 years, thus accelerating his learning of Tai Chi. The course is open to beginners and experienced martial artists alike. Newcomers to White Crane will focus on the breathing exercises (Whooping Crane), the first form (Pai Puh Lian) and partner work, whilst experienced students will add to and refine their existing practice. The course will benefit all martial artists, regardless of style, and will be of particular interest to students of Goju Ryu Karate Do as Master Huang was taught by Xie Zhong Xiang (a.k.a. Ryuryuko), who was known to be one of the (several) influences on Kanryo Higaonna in the early 20th Century. Although the kata(forms) have not been passed on directly to Goju Ryu, the underlying principles and methods clearly have been and their in-depth study under Wee Kee Jin could enhance one's appreciation of the Ju (soft/internal) aspects in Goju Ryu or any other martial art. Fujian White Crane is a soft-hard system with its fundamental basis in correct posture, alignment, breathing and "mind" to create and issue the "relaxed force" at speed. White Crane can be considered soft-hard because the emphasis is more on internal power than external strength. Whereas Goju Ryu Karate Do is hard-soft, as it places a slightly greater emphasis on the Go (muscular/external) power, than on Ju (soft/internal) power. |
