The Blues
fans now regularly shout Who? when a substitute's name for the opposing team is announced at St
Andrews. There are varying accounts of how this started. However, I do remember
that when Blues played Swindon Town a couple of seasons ago, that in an extremely
boring match, a substitute for Swindon came on in the second half. The player
involved had such a forgettable name (so much so I have forgotten it!) that when
the substitution was announced, quite a few of the Blues crowd, seemed to mutter
who? to their companions around them and a new football craze was born!
Since
then every substitute from the opposing team has been greeted with the same
shout, irrelevant if the crowd of heard of him or not. In fact it has become
more amusing when the player is well known! Keith Laurent the P.A. announcer has
also got in the act, by announcing substitutions in a quizzical voice such as
'replacing number 9 Ashley Ward.........Number 14.......Nathan.......Blake?. After
the now mandatory Who? from the Blues crowd, he has even repeated the players
name in answer to their query!
Away
from home the Blues fans have kept up the same routine, but in addition the fans
normally shout who? after every single team member of the opposition has been
announced, just before the match kicks off. Again when Facing Swindon at the County Ground last season, Swindon brought on a substitute a half
time. Now we know that the Blues fans need
no invitation to shout WHO? after the sub has been announced, but when the sub
was announced as 'the former Chippenham Town goal scoring machine Charlie
Griffin' you knew exactly what was going to happen as the loudest 'WHO?' of the
day echoed around the half empty ground!
