Bramall Lane - Sheffield United
Tuesday 14th February 2006
Vs Reading, Championship League, 7.45pm
By Peter Reed

This fixture was the biggest so far for both teams and excitement and anticipation were amongst the ranks, getting text messages of my mate (a blade) giving the usual banter. This was going to be a brilliant game and it did not disappoint.

My journey to and from Bramall Lane was relatively easy although policing made it difficult after the match to get away, but apart from that it was ok. I parked on a back street near the away end and my car was in one piece when I got back!! Due to my mate been a United fan, I knew which pubs to avoid as Sheff Utd fans are very passionate about their club and you could definitely feel the anticipation in the air around the ground. I went for a drink in a pub called The Royal Standard, I would not recommend this for away fans! I only went there because my mate told me id be fine if I didn't wear colours. In the pub I found the home fans fairly friendly and the banter was flowing!

My first impressions of the ground were a bit disappointing if I'm honest but it doesn't tell the story. Bramall Lane has for me got to be one of the most impressive older grounds I've ever seen. The ground is really compact with three corners filled in and the corner to the right of the away end under construction. I was really impressed with the ground and for my first ever visit I was pleasantly surprised. Due to been a top of the table match I expected the atmosphere to be good and it lived unto it. The home fans are very vocal and passionate. Our following was very good swell so it made for a great atmosphere.

United took the lead and it was deafening but Dave Kitson levelled soon after and it was us Reading fans who could have the 10 minutes of vocals! There were a lot of stewards and police in the ground and stewarding was a bit harsh. One Reading fan got thrown out for constantly standing , a bit unfair but there you go... Half Time I endulged in a chicken balti pie which never seems to disappoint. I did find however prices to be a bit costly!

After the game it was hard to get out from the away end but after a few minutes things cleared and I got back to my car safely. We gained a well earned point but should have had three if kitson would have converted a last minute penalty. Overall I enjoyed the game and it was a great advert for The Championship. I found the ground very good and the home fans very passionate and vocal. This made it a great game and a wonderful atmosphere from start to finish. I wish Sheff Utd the best of luck for second spot because they aren't going to catch us.
