Matt Busby took over as manager at Old
Trafford in October 1945 and remained as manager for 24 years, before
'moving upstairs' to become a General Manager in 1969. He again managed the
team for a short spell in the 1970-71, before finally relinquishing his
management role to become a Director of the Club.
During his reign the Club won five league titles (1952, 1956, 1957, 1965 &
1967), two FA Cups (1948 & 1963) plus the biggest prize of all the European
Cup in 1968. He will also be remembered for creating that young team that
became known as the 'Busby Babes' many of whom had their lives tragically
cut short after the Munich air crash in 1958. Matt Busby himself came close
to death in that disaster and was given the 'Last Rites' on two occasions
following it.
He recovered though to re-build the team and he was knighted after that
European Cup winning success. In 1993 the Warwick Road North passing Old
Trafford was officially renamed Sir Matt Busby Way. Sir Matt Busby passed
away in 1994. The statue above was unveiled in 1996 in tribute to the man
who was known as 'Mr Manchester United'.
