Sincil Bank
Lincoln City v Torquay

I had travelled over 250 miles to Lincoln knowing that they only needed a draw to get in a the playoffs which would also deny Oxford a place in them. Oxford's manager Ian Atkin's had said that "We were unsportmanslike" with our celebrations after we beat them 3-2. So this was the only time Torquay fans would have been happy to draw or even lose. A few of us went into the pub within the ground just before the match and had a lot of pre match banter with a lot of their fans and they were really nice. Much different then when we went to Hull who wouldn't let us in any pubs and some even threatened to kill every Torquay fan they saw if Hull didn't win.

I didn't know what to expect of Lincoln's ground due to never being there before and also didn't know what stand we were in as City were expecting a massive crowd. We were eventually put into the Mundy Stand behind on of the goals which would only hold around 600-700 fans but still offers quite a good view of the action although a bit restrictive with the goal posts in the way. The ground filled up fast and in the Torquay end, we were beginning to think that if Lincoln scored, that it would be VERY loud.

I was very impressed with the main stand to our left which was filled to it's (approx) 5,500 capacity after the normal away end was given to the home fans to get as big a home crowd as possible. Their end of seasons awards were presented with each award getting a massive cheer to who it was awarded to. However, it was only about half the crowd clapping as most of them hadn't been to a game this season but everyone (even us Torquay fans) gave City manager Keith Alexander a standing ovation for what he had done that season.

The game started and the play was dominated by Lincoln who could have got 5-0 up within the first 5 minutes. The crowd in the main stand were extremely loud and didn't stop singing for almost the entire match. In the other stand behind the goal however, there was virtually no noise whatsoever. The acoustics in the Mundy Stand weren't the best but we still made a lot of noise when we open the scoring. It was a bit weird afterwards though, hearing a deafening silence for a brief time after our goal from an otherwise sound barrier bursting home crowd. The game continued with Lincoln fans continuing to chant loudly to try and spur their team on but every missed opportunity brought loud of crys of "Oh well, another season over." However, City equalised with 5 minutes to go and the place turned into a carnival, it was louder than anywhere else, even though the home crowd had about 5,000 less than that at Hull a few weeks ago, they still made themselves louder. The final whistle went and the Lincoln fans just invaded the pitch very quickly. Some came over and congratulated us on having a good season and some even swapped shirts with some of our fans. As we left the ground to get back on the coach, we looked back at the Lincoln fan's who were in delirium and were thinking, that could have been us.

Overall Lincoln is a really nice place to go to with really friendly fans and a nice little stadium. My only objection is the stand opposite the main stand which is only about 1/3 of the pitch in length. If that was made full length and the seats were all painted one colour, then this would be a truly excellent stadium. Lincoln fans are some of the most passionate I have met and are incredibly down to earth and it has to be said, it is the best atmosphere at an away ground that I have ever experienced.
