What Is Chi?

Chi is a form of energy, which is regarded as the fundamental component of the universe. Chi can also be described as ‘vital energy’, which is contained in all things such as mist, wind and human beings. Chi flows around the body much as the way blood does but it flows around in meridians not through the veins.
Chi is regarded as a basic component of the human being and through special breathing exercises it is believed that you can cultivate and control your chi.

There are points along the meridians where you can interface with the flow of chi. these points are used by acupuncturists where chi can be conditioned, calmed or dispersed. Chi is believed to settle in a special point called the ‘dan-tien’ a spot 8cm below the naval. This point happens to be the centre of gravity of the body. One of the aims of the respiratory and meditation exercises is it strengthen the chi in the dan-tien and the martial artist stance becomes rooted and balanced and the mind becomes clear.

Breathing techniques on the solar plexus develop the flow of chi for explosive power. There are three dan-tien. The upper body is located between the eyes and is the centre of mental and spiritual dimensions. The middle dan-tien is at the level of the heart where your emotions are located. The lower dan-tien 8cm lower of the navel is considered to be the centre power of the body.
