Match "Report" - Sunday 15th September
For the first game of the season and with only one training session behind us, we took our youngest ever U16 squad to Milton Keynes to face the "Mad Kows". We also took the opportunity to play quite a few girls out of their "normal" positions.
We got off to a bit a shaky start when the Mad Kows scored almost straight from the opening kick-off to take a 7-0 lead. However, we soon settled down and began to take the game to Milton Keynes. Some clever kicking from Sarah Mckenna helped us to pin them back into their own 22 and our line was rarely under threat again. Chloe led the scoring with 5 tries (show-off !) and Sian Williams, who dominated at the Centre position, swerved through the defence to add another 2. "Winger" Hannah Clark made a number of good breaks and eventually sped around the outside to touch down whilst Claire Penn barrelled straight through, taking advantage of an unsighted referee to "score" in the corner. Debutante Stephanie Crome had an excellent first match and made a number of good tackles and breaks down the wing. Late in the game, she was rewarded with her first try. However, to balance things out, this was followed fairly shortly by her first smack on the nose ! Natalie Sullivan made some crunching stops and was unlucky not to score on a number of occasions before FINALLY getting her first Scorpions try with the last play of the match.
Our new U16 captain, Alicia Allcorn, had an excellent game at scrum-half and was all over the opposition. She even managed to get in a nice clearing kick. Sarah Mckenna at fly-half seemed to be everywhere and launched most of our attacks. She also kicked a couple of conversions (although we will draw a veil over THAT drop-kick attempt, late in the match).
Becca Winter was absolutely solid in defence and only just failed to record her first try when she was called back for an alleged hand-off. Andi Winrow had a very good game and was also held up over the line a couple of times. Rhiannon played her best ever match for Scorpions and, despite protestations of exhaustion, got about the pitch very well indeed.
All in all, not a bad start to the season, but the coaches are all looking forward to getting the girls back to 3 solid training sessions in preparation for the 7's tournament on the 13th October. I'm sure all of the girls are looking forward to it too !
