2000/2001 - Tour Report
|
On the 23rd February, Scorpions RFC went on it's second "tour", this time to Center Parcs at
Elveden, Suffolk. The party comprised 18 girls, 6 "mums", 3 coaches and 3 brothers with everyone
decked out in our new (and very bright) yellow club polo shirts.

Three idiots and the tour polo shirts
We set off from Hitchin RFC at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, courtesy of C&G Coaches. The journey only
took 90 minutes, but the awful singing from the back of the bus made it feel much, much longer.
On arrival, we were faced with a long trek as our chalets were at the furthest away point in the
entire park (much whingeing from so called fit teenagers). The chalets themselves were absolutely
excellent, at least until the girls unpacked. We hit the pool and facilities as quickly as possible
and generally had a great time. The girls took over the disco on the Friday night and turned it
into a party. As expected, not many of them got much sleep that night.
Next day, the adults emerged bleary-eyed to play badminton early on Saturday morning. They were a
combination of unfit "used to play this about 10 years ago" people and some very good ringers
(Trish and Alison in particular). Whilst the girls disappeared to try out more activities, the
adults spent the rest of the day doing what they were best at i.e. eating and drinking. As is
traditional (we did it once before !), the mums were invited to the coaches chalet for one of
Dave Stokes' famous curries, a few lemonades and to watch the rugby.
After the curry, we hit the swimming pool and then onto the disco again. Once again, the girls
took over and all sorts of "cheesy" music was requested. We even finished the evening off with
the "hokey-cokey" which got a little more physical than normal (I'm sure he's recovered by now
Cait). Disco finished, we trudged through the snow, back to the chalets. Word quickly got round
that some of Dave's curry was left and our chalet was soon swamped with hungry girls. Once the
food was finished, they disappeared and the coaches were able to get some sleep. However, the
mums and girls kept going for most of the night with bottles of wine (the mums) and 15-person
human pyramids (the girls). Thankfully it wasn't the other way around. The festivities ended
at around 5:30 a.m. and the girls finally got a couple of hours sleep.

The famous 15-girl human pyramid, at about 2:30 a.m.
(the final person, BFG, was literally thrown on top !)
On Sunday, we travelled to Framlingham College for a series of 7-a-side matches. After averaging
about 3 or 4 hours sleep a night, the girls weren't quite as lively as normal but "cheerleader"
Alex soon got them going again with a few songs (only some of which were dirty). We played 3
matches, winning 2 of them. Afterwards, Framlingham very kindly catered for us and presented us
with Framlingham College pennants. In return, Chairman Dave gave a speech thanking them and Nicky
presented them with a specially engraved, commemorative Scorpions RFC Tour shield. Back on the bus,
the whole week-end finally caught up with us and the journey home was much quieter.

This is what too much partying and a total of 8 hours sleep over a week-end will do to you !
Everyone seemed to have a great time and some of the adults even said they would do it again !
